From staff reports

McCONNELLSBURG - The McConnellsburg girls basketball team held off Sideling Hill League and Inter-County Conference rival Forbes Road for the second time this season on Saturday with a 40-30 win.

The Spartans (10-1, 4-9 SHL, 5-9 ICC) previously had beaten the Cardinals 39-30.

This time around Libby Strayer shined for McConnellsburg after not playing in the first game - leading the team with 13 points.

"Libby had eight points in the third quarter," Spartan coach Dave Garland said. "She hit two 3-pointers fairly close together that helped us stretch the leading to seven points in the fourth quarter."

FR (6-15, 1-12 SHL, 2-12 ICC) jumped out to an 8-6 after the first quarter but couldn't keep up with McConnellsburg from there. The Spartans outscored them 22-13 in the ensuing two quarters.

McConnellsburg's outrebounded the Cardinals 31-20. It also limited Forbes Road leading scorers Shayla Carmack and Braylin Hohman to 13 and 7 points, respectively.

Cardinal coach Stacy Horne said, "Defensively I thought we did a decent job. It was just our offense - it seemed like we couldn't buy a basket there for awhile."
