MERCERSBURG - The James Buchanan hit the throttle early and didn't let up for three quarters, taking a 50-16 victory over Littlestown in a non-league girls basketball game on Saturday.

The Rockets (4-13) jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter, built the advantage to 33-8 by halftime and shut out the Thunderbolts 15-0 in the third period. They led 48-8 at that point.

Cheyenne Carbaugh had another double-double for JB, scoring 11 points and getting 10 rebounds. Charity Miller and Tristen Amsley added eight points apiece.

Rick Cristofano said, "We came out fast. It was a good opportunity to get pretty much everyone into the game. The freshmen did a good job for us and Cheyenne Carbaugh had another good game. I say that a lot (about her), but it's true."

Mercersburg Academy won its second game in a row with a 17-point road win at Middleburg Blue Storm assistant coach David Bell said, "That 18-5 start (in the first quarter) was the key. We came out with strong defense and put the pressure on them. We put the game away early." Mercersburg (11-3) got balanced scoring from Melody Gomez (12 points), Sarah Firestone (10) and Hanna Warfield (10) and Teal Tasker (9) Gomez had 10 rebounds and Firestone added 8 McKenzie Brink blocked 3 shots.
