NEW KINGSTOWN - Coming off their first win of the new year, the Chambersburg Trojans once again struggled against a very tough Cumberland Valley squad.

In a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division girls basketball matchup Friday night, Chambersburg struggled offensively and could muster only 20 points in a 52-20 defeat against first-place Cumberland Valley.

Despite the loss, Chambersburg coach Jenny Schmutzler said her girls did accomplish some of things for which she had hoped.

"When we were able to set up our offense and make their offense set up, we played right with them," Schmutzler said. "It was 31-9 at the halftime, and our goal at that point was to keep them under 55 and work on some things, and we did. We just have to learn and grow every game."

Darra Walker was the leading scorer for the Trojans (4-10, 2-8 MPC) with eight points, including six from the line. Senior Marshay Ryan once again filled up the stat sheet. She had just six points, but added a team-leading four rebounds and two steals.

Chambersburg's defense was strong. This was just the fourth time that Cumberland Valley (14-2, 9-1 MPC) has scored 52 points or fewer.

Schmutlzer said, "You can look at this game two ways. One, we just got our butts kicked. But on defense, we did a great job not letting them score when they had to set their offense up. Unfortunately, their transition killed us. More than half their points came off steals or a defensive rebound and a fast break."

The leading scorer for the Eagles was Maddie Torresin, who had 13. Jackie Falconer and Kelly Jekot joined her in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
