CARLISLE - The lid was on the basket for the Chambersburg boys basketball team Tuesday night.

And the Trojans couldn't find enough easy shots or prevent Carlisle from scoring enough to avoid a 58-47 Thundering Herd victory in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division game at Evans Gym.

"This was our most disappointing game so far," Chambersburg coach Beau Gantz said. "We should be peaking right now. But we're too inconsistent, both in our play and in our effort."

The Trojans (8-5, 4-5 MPC) were effective on offense early, taking a 19-16 lead after one quarter. But Chambersburg followed that by scoring only 28 points the rest of the way, including just six in the second period.

The biggest culprit was shooting - the Trojans connected on only 18 of 60 shots (30 percent).

Gantz said, "Give Carlisle some credit - they came out in a zone and hurt us. Our bigs weren't active inside and we settled for jumpers. When you live by the jumper, you die by the jumper."

At the other end, Carlisle (8-6, 4-5 MPC), which has been red-hot lately, was able to get to the rim. The Herd led 26-25 at halftime and gradually pulled away in the second half. The 58 points allowed by Chambersburg was tied for the third-highest total this year.

"We did not play good defense," Gantz said. "They had way too many uncontested layups. The guards were letting them penetrate and then our bigs weren't there to challenge them. We couldn't protect the basket.
