NEW KINGSTOWN - Shippensburg's girls basketball team entered Saturday afternoon's Cumberland Valley Christmas Tournament championship game on a roll.

That momentum came to a halt thanks to the host Cumberland Valley Eagles, who flew by the Lady Hounds 78-37 to win their own tournament.

The second quarter made all the difference.

Jackie Falconer sank 11 of her 15 points as part of a 31-7 Eagle onslaught that left Ship trailing 42-15 at the half.

"Cumberland Valley is a team that you cannot give an inch to," said Lady Hounds coach Amy Lyman about letting the game slip away. "We gave them a mile. They are tall, fast, disciplined and talented."

That combination proved to be too much pressure for Ship's offense to sustain success.

"We had some good moments from our offense," Lyman said, "but we didn't adjust well to their aggressive defense. We struggled to take care of the ball under pressure, and CV did a great job of capitalizing on our weaknesses."

The Eagles' Kelly Jekot netted 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half.

Ships' Alysia Clawson was named to the All-Tournament team, averaging 10 points (12 against the Eagles). Alicia Johnson led the Lady Hounds with 16 points vs. CV.
