From staff reports

HUSTONTOWN - Forbes Road fans just about got their money's worth at Thursday's Teddy Thanos Memorial Tournament.

In two girls basketball games on their home court, the Cardinals shot 58 percent as a team and the games were decided by a combined three points.

The only thing FR couldn't deliver was a championship victory. Instead the Fannett-Metal Tigers enjoyed that honor with a 52-50 win over the Cardinals.

F-M defeated the Frederick Force 64-40 in the first round and Forbes Road edged Shalom Christian 48-47. Frederick then defeated Shalom in the consolation, 48-40.

With a two-point lead and seconds left in regulation of the final, the Tigers sent Megan Dougherty to the line for two free throws. Dougherty, who at the time was 10-for-12 from the line, missed both shots, leaving the Cardinals a chance to set up a game tying or winning possession.

"We got the ball across half court and called a timeout (with 2.9 seconds left)," Cardinals coach Stacy Horne said. "We tried to run a set play, but it didn't work, so we called timeout again."

Fannett-Metal coach Jen Lauthers said, "It was the longest 2.9 seconds. They had a chance to score, and they were going to go for a three (pointer)."

Off the inbound pass, the Cardinals hoisted a missed shot followed by a putback attempt with time expiring, but when the scoreboard flashed zeroes the ball hadn't found the bottom of the net.

"We definitely worked the ball around well, reversed the ball nicely, made great passes," Horne said.

"Just a couple of simple mistakes and it could have been different."

Predicting the Cardinals would lose a game in which they shot 69 percent from the field as a team to the Tigers' 25 percent would be all but impossible, but that was the case.

FM's key to victory was getting to the charity stripe.

"One of our focuses was to be more aggressive and take the ball to the hole," Lauthers said. "We got fouled a lot and we went to the line a lot."

The Tigers outscored the Cardinals at the line 23-5, just enough of a margin to seal a victory.

That, plus two clutch free throws from a freshman coming off the bench in the fourth quarter of a championship contest.

With the score knotted at 50 and Melissa Zeger (10 points, 9 rebounds) having fouled out for FM, Lauthers called down the bench for Caroline Yarish, who grabbed an offensive rebound amidst a loose ball scuffle and got fouled on the putback attempt.

Having played just two minutes in the game, Yarish knocked down her first free throw. Horne called for timeout from the FR bench to try and ice the rookie, but Yarish wasn't fazed, knocking down her second free throw.

The two wins come as a much needed upswing for a Tigers team that waited seven days to get back on the court after suffering a tough loss to Tussey Mountain.

For Dougherty, the two missed free throws were about the only miscues the Tigers' leading scorer made on the day. She finished the day with 40 points, 26 of which came in FM's first round trouncing of Frederick Force.

Though exciting, FR's 48-47 win over Shalom Christian - helped by 22 points from Braylin Hohman - might have taken too much gas out of the Cardinals' tank. After getting to the line 23 times against the Flames, the Cardinals only attempted 10 free throws against FM. In fact, the Cardinals were lucky just to escape SC and reach the championship.

"Free throw shooting and turnovers really hurt us," Shalom Christian coach Brad Eby said. "But we were still able to rally back and make it a good finish. We were down by six (points) with 30 seconds left, forced some turnovers and steals, and were right there at the end."

Eby saw the fatigue from such a tight first-round finish show in the Flames' 48-40 consolation loss to Frederick Force.

"It's tough playing back-to-back close games, but our girls fought hard," Eby said. "We did make a surge (against Frederick Force) at the end, got within two (points), and then had more defensive breakdowns."

Shalom, which got a combined 32 points from Tori Yoder, shared in the free throw woes department with Forbes Road. The Flames made 15 of 39 from the line for the day; the Cardinals were 19 of 33.

"If we hit our foul shots, the score might look a lot different," Eby said.
