A change in the way the PIAA counted wrestling events resulted in a change to the structure of the third annual Dale Bock Memorial Tournament, which is Saturday at CASHS Field House.
Instead of the 12-team field that last year's event had, there are seven teams competing in the duals tournament. There will be one pool of four teams and one pool of three teams, and each team except the third-place team in the three-team pool will wrestle five duals.
"It kind of left us hanging when we lost our eighth team," Chambersburg coach Doug Rine said. "We will make a random draw on Saturday morning to determine the brackets for each team. That way, all the teams have the same chance to be in that three-team pool and get only four duals in."
The teams still include the two-time defending champion, Bermudian Springs, currently ranked No. 9 in the state in Class AA. Also in the field is last year's runner-up, Chestnut Ridge, which is ranked No. 20 in AA.
In addition to the Trojans, the other teams are State College, Southern Huntingdon, Fairfield and Century, Md. Chambersburg's match against State College will count as a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match.
Rine said, "When the PIAA changed the way they counted comps (competitions), it made a big difference. If we had run it the same way as last year, with 12 teams and each getting 10 duals in, it would have cost teams six comps each. For four of those teams, they couldn't fit us in."
The teams that had to drop out were Gettysburg, Carlisle, Urbana, Md. and Fluvanna County, Va. James Buchanan was also in last year's event, and hoped to be in this year's, but some miscommunication caused the Rockets to drop out late.
Three mats will be used in the CASHS Field House and there will be six sessions of matches - at 8:30 and 10 a.m. and 12:15 to complete pool matches, then rounds at 3:30, 5 and 6:30 to determine the overall places.
In addition to the two state-ranked teams, a total of 11 wrestlers ranked in the top 25 in the state are scheduled to be in action. Chambersburg has two in Class AAA - Tanner Shoap 3rd at 113) and Garett Hammond (1st at 152) - while in AA, Bermudian Springs has four (Ted Marines at 132, HM; Austin Jackson at 138, 9th; Tristan Sponseller at 182, 2nd; and Brock Linebaugh at 195, 8th) and Chestnut Ridge has five (Derrick Claar at 126, 18th; Brodie Bollman at 170, 9th; Tyler Dibert at 182, 9th; Dan Albright at 220, 8th; and Austin Buttry at 285, 7th).
Both Shoap and Hammond battled slight injuries at last weekend's Beast of the East, but Rine is expecting to have them back for the Bock event.
"I think we should be fine," Rine said. "I think if we're healthy we have a shot at winning it."
The event will also include a JV tournament, with sessions from 11:30 to 12:15 and again from 1:45 to completion.
OTHER TOURNAMENTS: Three other area wrestling teams are in action this weekend - James Buchanan is in Friday's Donegal Tournament, Greencastle-Antrim competes in the Smithsburg (Md.) Tournament on Saturday and Waynesboro is entered in the Conestoga Valley Tournament, which is Friday and Saturday.
ALSO RANKED: The state Class AAA rankings include three other area wrestlers - Cody Carbaugh of Greencastle-Antrim at 113 (No. 18), Cary Hess of Shippensburg at 285 (No. 18) and Ship's Dylan Herb at 195 (No. 25).
