BASKETBALL
Waynesboro Maidens
Coach: Doug Stuart, ninth year, 179-266 (.402).
Last year: 5-17 (3-9 Mid Penn Colonial Division).
Starters lost: Megan Baker, Erin Taylor.
Returning starters: Dori Kozain (sr., C, 5-10); Hunter Mowen (sr., G, 5-5); Mallory Patterson (jr., G, 5-5); Sam Nichols (jr., G, 5-5); Lauren Wagaman (jr., F, 5-6).
Other top players: Lily Harnish (so., F, 5-6); Kristy McFerren (so., F, 5-8); Katie Clawson (fr., G, 5-4); Abby Roxby (fr., G, 5-5); Kennedy Chandler (fr., F, 5-7).
Outlook: Stuart said, "This is definitely a rebuilding year. Our point guard Sam Nichols and center Dori Kozain are back. The rest of the girls do not have a lot of varsity experience or size, and we have a hard time putting the ball in the hole sometimes. But the girls do scrap and hustle, and do some of those intangibles that sometimes players won't do well."
Note: When effective, Kozain's strong post-up game mixed with her ability to hit outside jumpers can spread an opposing defense If that's the case, Waynesboro can look for Nichols, a slashing scorer, to capitalize on the open lanes left for her to drive to the basket.
Next game: Tonight, day two of the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament.
