Mercersburg Academy's suffocating team defense was on display Saturday afternoon and it dominated Cumberland Valley Christian, 52-18, to open the season with a non-league girls basketball win.

The Blue Storm wasted no time, grabbing a 21-6 first quarter advantage.

"We got off to a really fast start," Mercersburg assistant coach David Bell said. "Our defense has real intensity in the first half and that set the tone for the game."

Senior guard Hanna Warfield led the Blue Storm at both ends of the court, netting a game-high 21 points while acounting for six of the team's 20 steals. Sarah Firestone helped with 14 points and eight rebounds and Teal Tasker added eight points, seven steals and three assists.

For the Blazers (1-2), who got 12 points from Hannah Turner (all on 3-pointers), coach Mike Sanders knows his team's 27 turnovers will be the prime focus going forward.

"I'm hoping to see a better defensive effort in our next game," Sanders said. "I want us to box out and limit the turnovers."
