And they paid dividends on Tuesday night when the Cardinals beat Shady Side Academy, 2-1 in OT, in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday night.
After Shady Side pulled away early - Audray Koi scored a goal just seven minutes into the contest - Forbes Road never gave up.
The game remained 1-0 until the waning seconds of the contest, and it looked as if Shady Side would take the shut out victory.
Then Forbes Road started to take advantage of its set plays. Corey Parsons took a shot off a corner, which was stopped by the pads Shady Side keeper Gabby Harchelrodd. But Shania Gelvin was there to scoop up the rebound and put it in the back of the net. With just 30 seconds left in the game, the Cardinals had knotted the score at one.
Shady Side came out a new team in overtime, though. Six of the Indians' 11 shots of the night came in OT.
"Usually we're stronger in overtime, and we were not," Forbes Road coach Carol Cline said. "We were tired, and we did some multiple subbing. We just weren't able to keep them from bringing the ball in the circle. Pretty much in regulation, we were in control of the game, but in overtime, they were."
Cardinal goaltender Olivia Mills stopped all six of the Indians' shots in OT to give her offense a chance for the "W."
"Olivia was just awesome," Cline said. "She was so busy, but Olivia did fantastic at that time."
With just under a minute left in OT, Forbes Road broke free.
"She has such a rocket shot," Cline said. "We called it the laser shot. When we got that penalty corner in the overtime, they even said, 'Watch the rocket.' And Corey just sent in a bullet."
With the victory, Forbes Road (15-2-1) advanced to the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals, which will be played on Saturday at Lower Dauphin at noon. The Cardinals will face Greenwood, which beat its opening round match up against Line Mountain, 3-0.
