SHIPPENSBURG - It was a day unlike any other for Chambersburg track & field coaches Chris Monheim and Bob Walker, and one they'll be talking about for years to come.
Competing in the PIAA Championships at Seth Grove Stadium under a sweltering sun and with temperatures in the high 80s, the Trojans ended Day 2 with five medals, two photo finishes and one of the best days in program history.
"I'm just really proud of all of our athletes at what they were able to do this entire season," Walker said. "Not only are they talented, but they're good, fun kids to be around. The coaching staff enjoys being around them and that's a blessing for a coaching staff."
Marshay Ryan won the triple jump, Jessica Whitmore and the boys 4 x 800 relay (Nick Rotz, Adam Harriger, Aaron Powell and Ryun Holder) took second place in near-first photo finishes, and Nick Rotz and Kellen Williams placed fifth in the 1600 run and 300 hurdles, respectively. The other area medal winner was Southern Fulton's Jacob Ashkettle, who finished eighth in the Class AA 400 dash.
JUMPING FOR GOLD: Ryan was noticeably fatigued during Saturday's competition, but that didn't change her result.
A day after winning the long jump, Ryan continued her success in the triple jump by landing a 38 foot, 8 inch leap, a bit shorter than her 39-8.5 jump at the District 3 meet, but still eight inches ahead of the second-place finisher.
"It's not what I expected; anything can happen,"
The winning jump came on her first try of the day, when she had her most energy.
When she wasn't jumping, Ryan could be found in the few areas of shade on the turf field: either behind a bench near the tents or under an umbrella, a popular option for all the athletes.
When she reched the finals, it was apparent that she had all but wrapped up first place. She took

"I have a goal to get back here," Ryan said. "Now I'm just focused on nationals and the rest of the year."
MISS CONSISTENCY:Chambersburg sprinter Whitmore had been in this setting before - four times to be exact.
The senior had already won medals at the state meet in each of the past three years - third place once, and fourth twice - and entering Friday she had a chance to be the first Trojan to medal at states all four years.
After the qualifying round, Whitmore was slotted as the sixth seed, but she knew in the fastest race of the day, anything could happen.
The key for her was how she came out of the blocks.
"I definitely feel like my start's been really strong these last few weeks so I was just trying to get out first and maintain that throughout the race," Whitmore said.
Coming to the finish line, Whitmore was neck-and-neck with Coatesville's Kenya Woodall and they crossed the finish line in the same time of 12.07.
Whitmore was initially announced the victor, but after a review it was determined that Woodall, in fact, had won. Still, the smile never left Whitmore's face from the time she left the track until the medal was around her neck.
"Everyone is so close this year, the sprinters were so good that it was anybody's race," she said. "It was so close that I
RESILIENT ROTZ: There was no time for Rotz to think about his performance in the 4 x 800 relay.
Not even an hour and a half after setting a personal record of 1:54.2 during the initial leg of the relay, Rotz was back on the track competing in the 1600 run.
The short period of rest was enough of an obstacle. Add in the energy-draining heat and it could have been a recipe for disaster. And finishing second in the 4 x 800 by .03 second could have been mentally taxing.
But Rotz prevailed.
"As a coach, I never worry about Nick Rotz not giving us everything he has," Walker said. "He's just that kind of kid."
Rotz started out fast and was running with the front of the pack after the first 400 meters and held his place midway through the race.
Then fatigue set in and he started to fall back.
After the third lap the senior was in fourth place and coming into the final 100 meters he fell back to seventh.
"I came into knowing it was the last race of my whole entire high school career," Rotz said. "I wanted to give it the best I could. My goal was to get a state medal. That last 100 meters was the last 100 meters I'd ever run on a high school track, so I decided to go for it, all or nothing, last race. After that loss to Cumberland Valley, getting second, we were a little upset, but it gave me a little motivation to come in here and try my best in my individual event."
Summoning what energy he had left, Rotz made a push down the final stretch and as he neared the finish line he split the two runners in front of him and crossed the finish line in fifth place in 4:18.81, a personal record by almost a second.
"I'm not completely 100 percent in love with my time, but it was a PR. You can't ask for much more than that," Rotz said.
BIG STAGE, BIG PERFORMANCE: Williams has shown the ability to give his best performances on the biggest stages before.
He was the leading receiver for the Trojans football team and he made big play after big play during Chambersburg's run to a District 3-AAAA title in basketball.
No one should have expected anything different on the track.
Entering the state trials Friday, Williams was the 22nd seed in the 300 hurdles, viewed by many as a participant along for the ride. But Williams didn't see it that way.
"It's just my will to win," Williams said. "I know I can compete with these guys, which I showed today. So I just go out there, run my hardest and see what I get."
A junior, Williams finished second in his heat on Friday, making him a member of the eight qualifiers for the final Saturday.
The final race got off to a shaky start as Williams knocked over his first hurdle.
"I've been hitting hurdles all year," he said. "It didn't bother me at all. I kept running and tried to keep my composure. When I hit a hurdle, I just have to forget about and go to the next one."
From there, Williams ran a flawless race and finished in 38.49, just .03 ahead of his personal record.
"I came out here and did what I tried to do: get a state medal," he said. "Nobody expected me to be this high, so I'm going to try to do it again next year as well."
ON TOP OF THE WORLD: Southern Fulton's Ashkettle just wanted to get a medal at the District 5 championships.
To qualify for the PIAA meet and make it to the finals made the year even sweeter.
"I'm on top of the world right now," the junior said. "I never thought I'd make it this far."
Ashkettle was running in the pack for the first part of the race, then he said the other runners took off. It was him and Northern Lehigh's Caleb Johnson racing to the finish line together, with Johnson edging Ashkettle by two hundreths of a second.
"I figured I'd walk out of here 11th place like yesterday," said Ashkettle, who said he didn't feel the heat and went cold once he got in the blocks. "I'm estatic. This is amazing."
GOING DOWN IN HISTORY: Chambersburg boys coach Bob Walker said if this was someone's first track & field meet, it would be hard to replicate.
Records were broken not only by Chambersburg athletes but by athletes across the board.
The crowd roared at countless close finishes, urged racers forward during record-breaking runs and gasped when vaulters and high jumpers barely missed their marks.
As for Chambersburg's performance, this one will be talked about for years to come.
"The 4 x 800 team, they're going to be the team that everybody in Chambersburg, in the future, says we want to be like those guys," Walker said. "And Nick Rotz, what a tough kid. What he did this weekend, that's going to be legendary, too. Our coaching staff will talk about the toughness of Nick Rotz. Every race he ran he got the most out of himself."
"This is the best state meet by far in the years I've coached," said Trojan girls Chris Monheim, who is in his 10th year, after his team placed fourth. "This is the kind of end you sort of dream of.
"Maybe the common theme with all of them is the bigger the meet the better they are. That's nice to have kids like that."
