Facing the prospects of a winless season as well as the top-ranked team in Class AAA in District Three, the Palmyra football team put a scare into the Crusaders on Saturday morning, if only for a brief moment.

The Cougars jumped on top of McDevitt 7-0 in the first quarter on a Mason Laudermilch-to-Tom Weider five-yard touchdown pass, but from there it was all Crusaders as they rolled to a 49-14 victory. The loss ends Palmyra's season at 0-10 while McDevitt enters the postseason with a sparkling 10-0 record.

Trailing 7-0, the Crusaders tied the game with a one-yard run with 1:59 to play in the opening period, then scored four times in the second quarter to build a 35-7 halftime lead. It was 42-7 before Palmyra scored its second touchdown, a Laudermilch 25-yard run that made it a 42-14 game in the third quarter.

But that was as close as the Cougars would get despite a defensive effort that held McDevitt to just 125 yards rushing even though it scored six times on the ground

  • Columbia 24, Northern Lebanon 0: In Fredericksburg, the Crimson Tide clinched a district playoff spot in Class A by shutting out the Vikings. Columbia (4-6) was the fourth and final team in the district rankings entering the game and only helped itself by beating a Class AAA school in Northern Lebanon (2-8).

Despite a scoreless first quarter, the Tide drove deep into Viking territory twice only to come away scoreless.

Columbia found the end zone in the second quarter to go up 6-0, and NL answered with a drive to the Tide 12 before a fumble on fourth down ended the threat.

Columbia responded with another score before the half to lead 12-0 at the break. A fake punt by the Vikings in the third quarter set the Tide up at the NL 32, but the Vikes' defense kept Columbia off the board.

Northern Lebanon drove to the Tide 9 later in the quarter but was intercepted, and Columbia responded with a drive that resulted in its third touchdown and an 18-0 lead.
