It's been a long, dry spell for Susquehannock's football team, but on Friday night the storm broke, as the Warriors won their first game since Sept. 3, 2010 by beating Kennard Dale, 27-18.
"It's awesome," said defensive end Justin McLee, who had two sacks. "We get to leave our stadium with a win. It's great for the seniors. I'm so excited right now."
It wasn't easy for the Warriors.
The Rams quickly took control at the start with a strong running game, punctuated by touchdown runs of 43 and 80 yards by Dallas Allen and Dan Hare, respectively.
Fortunately for Susquehannock, coach Bill Kerr would not let his team get down on themselves.
"All the effort we put forth during the season finally paid off," Kerr said. "This game was a microcosm of our season. We started off facing adversity, we fell down early, but the kids kept their heads up, and we were finally able to get the ball moving; we had some success."
The second quarter belonged to the Warriors, as Brian Kerr found Steven Nalls on a 13-yard fade pass for a touchdown, and the quarterback followed his left guard in from the 1-yard line for a second touchdown in the second quarter. An extra point and a completed conversion pass set the halftime score in the Warriors' favor, 15-12.
Susquehannock opened the second half with a 13-play drive that resulted in another Kerr-to-Nalls touchdown.
Kennard Dale penalties helped the drive -- one came on fourth-and-4. In all, the Rams racked up 111 penalty yards, which hindered their ability to execute.
"Getting that first score up in the second half, that was big because when you have two teams struggling like that, you just want to keep momentum, and we were able to do that, and it's a testament to those guys," Kerr said.
Susquehannock put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard scoring run by Steven Martinez.
Kerr connected on 13-of-26 passes for 138 yards.
