For a while on Saturday morning, it appeared York County Tech might have the advantages when it opposed Biglerville High in a YAIAA Division III battle at Spry.

There was the 10 a.m. start, a staple of Tech's home schedule, and an offense with explosive potential that brought the Spartans within 14-6 after one period.

But Biglerville then woke up in a big way.

Scoring two touchdowns in less than two minutes, the Canners (6-2, 6-1 YAIAA Division III) tallied 29 points in the second period and pulled away to an eventual 50-28 triumph.

"We looked a little tired coming off the bus," Biglerville head coach Alex Ramos said. "It's a long ride. It's early in the morning, and they're not used to playing this early.

"With all of the circumstances, I'm satisfied with how we came out and did. It was very evident who the better team on the field was, and I think we showed that."

In fact, the Canners displayed their skill in various ways in spurts.

First, quarterback Tanner Cool threw two of his three touchdown passes to complete the Canners' first two drives for the 14-0 lead. From there, running back Oakley Fissel sparkled.

After Tech scored an odd touchdown, a pass by Delmar Dickson that was deflected by Justin Delgado right to teammate Nashied Bones in the end zone, Fissel posted back-to-back carries of 16 and 38 yards for a touchdown to put Biglerville ahead, 21-6.

Bones responded, taking a pitch left after a

fake to Tech fullback Calvin Savary, and sped 62 yards to paydirt only 50 seconds later. Judonn Mitchell's conversion run brought Tech within 21-14.

Yet Fissel had his own answer. After his 23-yard kickoff return, he took the next handoff, shook off a tackle at the line and ran 65 yards to the end zone. Josh Asper's fourth of his five points-after gave Biglerville a 28-14 lead.

Blunting Tech's final two drives of the first half, Biglerville then gained its second touchdown catch by Tyler Lieberum and Hurda's second score to close the first half.

Hurda then added a 43-yard scoring run untouched early in the third period to invoke the running clock.

However, York Tech (2-6, 2-5) continued to show offensive punch, producing touchdowns by Calvin Savary and Dickson in the remaining time.

"Offensively, I thought we moved the ball pretty well against a pretty good defense," York Tech head coach Doug Wilkinson said, "but defensively we had too many mental breakdowns. People were looking in the backfield when we were supposed to be covering a man, just mental lapses.

"We're a young team, and that's part of the growing process. We've got to fix it."

Fissel finished with 151 yards rushing on only seven carries while Savary pounded out 158 yards on 26 attempts, many right into the heart of the Canner defensive front.

"On film, he looks strong. He doesn't look on film as big as he is in person. I mean, he's thick," Ramos said.
