Biglerville High wide receiver-defensive back Tyler Lieberum missed the Canners' previous two games due to a knee problem.
He sure made his presence felt in his return.
The senior hauled in four passes for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Canners to a 42-28 victory over Eastern York in YAIAA Division III football action on homecoming at Musselman Stadium in Biglerville.
"I saw from the start that they were in single coverage and my eyes lit up," Lieberum said. "(Quarterback) Tanner (Cool) threw some great balls and the offensive line blocked well for him to give him time to throw."
It didn't take long for Lieberum to put his stamp on the game as he capped the Canners' opening scoring march with a 34-yard touchdown catch less than 90 seconds into the contest.
Then, holding a 14-0 lead late in the first half, the Cool-Lieberum combo struck again, this time on a post route that Lieberum hauled in at midfield and raced to the end zone for an 87-yard touchdown with 3:02 to go in the first half.
Biglerville (6-1, 3-1 YAIAA III) managed to bottle up Golden Knight tailback Alex Cooley in the first half as it held the YAIAA rushing leader to 40 yards on 10 carries in the first 24 minutes.
That all changed on the first play from scrimmage in the second half as Cooley went 60 yards on a pitch play down the right sideline to put Eastern in business. He capped the drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 9:19 left in the third quarter.
The Canners answered immediately when Oakley Fissel capped a scoring drive with a 1-yard run with 7:46 left in the third quarter. Then the hosts cashed in following a Knight fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Josh Asper's 5-yard run upped the lead to 35-7.
Eastern (2-5, 1-3) would not go quietly into the night, though.
Cooley scored on back-to-back possessions, a 13-yard run late in the third quarter and a 54-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 35-21 with 8:52 left.
A snap over the Canner punter's head resulted in another Eastern touchdown as Christian Buser fell on the ball in the end zone to make it 35-28 with 6:48 to play.
Biglerville answered with a nice drive, but it stalled at the Knight 3-yard line with 2;41 to go. Eastern picked up a first down, but then Canner defensive back Taylor Group intercepted Taylor Thomas' pass with just over a minute to go.
Fissel then put the game out of reach with a 27-yard touchdown run.
"We played lights out in the first half and relaxed a little in the second half," Biglerville head coach Alex Ramos said. "We were in complete control, on our way to an easy win, and I think some guys thought it was over before it was."
After a tough first half, Cooley managed to finish with 211 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries.
"We had some mental mistakes in the first half and that caused us to fall behind," Eastern head coach Rick Brubaker said. "We made some adjustments at halftime, and that allowed us to get back in the game and the defense played well in the second half."
