He was about to compete in the Quarterback Challenge at York Area Sports Night on Wednesday. Naturally, it made sense to call up the person who had taught him everything he knows about being a quarterback.
Davis phoned his brother Jordan, a Hampton University quarterback a former William Penn standout. Sure enough, the elder Davis had a few pointers to offer.
"He said, 'I'm going to tell you exactly what you need to do,'" Dontae Davis recalled. "'Just stay calm, be humble, and do what you need to do.'"
The younger Davis must have listened. He bested a pair of Dallastown quarterbacks -- sophomore Austin Quinones and junior Josh Luckenbaugh -- in the finals of the challenge, navigating a series of drills with the fastest time. Quinones took second, while Luckenbaugh finished third.
The event was one of several athletic showcases interspersed throughout York Area Sports Night. Quarterbacks shuttled through a series of four drills meant to test agility, footwork and accuracy. They stepped over bags, shuffled between cones and tried to loft passes into a trash can, among other tasks.
Davis was a long shot -- the junior didn't play football this fall because of a "family issue," he said. But after two turns on the course, Davis had the fastest time.
That came as a shock.
"I thought I was in last place," Davis said.
Then again, he some good advice to lean on. Jordan Davis was a Division I tri-player of the year in
"He's taught me everything I know," Dontae Davis said. "I just tried to remember everything."
Davis also survived a preliminary round that featured roughly a dozen young signal callers from the area.
He plans to go out for football next season, although he may have a tough time making it on the field as a quarterback. Kelvin Parker, who started for William Penn last year before suffering a shoulder injury, will return for his senior season.
Davis had other things to worry about Wednesday.
First, finding a spot for the 3-foot trophy he lugged home.
Second, calling his older brother.
"I'm going to call him later on and tell him everything," Davis said. "I'm going to send him a picture of the trophy."
