Now, it looks like he'll spend next season trying to revive a Susquehannock program that went winless in 2009.
According to a statement on the Susquehannock football program's Web site, suskyfootball.com, the former Lancaster Catholic assistant has been tabbed to become the Warriors' next head coach. Gue will be recommended to the Southern York school board on Thursday.
Attempts to reach Gue and Susquehannock athletic director Chuck Abbott on Saturday were unsuccessful.
Lancaster Catholic head coach Bruce Harbach said Gue had informed him of his intentions to take the Susquehannock job.
"He's smart, works hard at what he does. He done various things for us," Harbach said. "It'll be interesting. It's easier being an assistant coach than a head coach, that's for sure."
If approved, Gue would replace Jerry Higgins, who was not retained in November after Susquehannock finished the season 0-10 - the program's first winless season since 1990.
A Dallastown High graduate with 17 years of coaching experience, Gue spent the last five years as an assistant at Lancaster Catholic, a stint that culminated in the Crusaders' PIAA Class AA championship this season.
Gue filled several different roles during his time in Lancaster. This past season, he served as varsity running backs coach and junior varsity offensive coordinator. He also was the program's video coordinator.
"He communicates well with the kids and the parents," Harbach said. "He's kind of an intense coach, which you have to be to be a head coach."
Gue will go from one of District 3's most successful programs to one of its most desperate. Susquehannock produced back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2005 and 2006, but has won eight total games the last three years.
The architect of those successful seasons - former coach Tom Waranavage - resigned for personal reasons midway through the 2008 campaign. His replacement, Higgins, went 1-14 in his brief time at the helm.
This season, Susquehannock managed 57 total points and lost its 10 contests by an average of 37.8 points.
Gue is scheduled to meet his new Susquehannock team on Monday afternoon, the Web site's statement said. A separate meet-and-greet for community members will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the high school.
