Another chapter was written in the bitter rivalry between the York Suburban Trojans and Susquehannock Warriors Friday night, and it was not a happy one for the home team.
The Trojans spoiled the Warriors' senior night with a 21-7 victory.
Because of a few big plays, Suburban built an early lead and relied on its running game, racking up 389 yards on the ground.
"We just thought that up front, we would be able to be successful and to move the ball on the ground," Trojans coach Bill Kerr said, "and that was basically what we set out to do."
The game started as a fairly even affair, with each team able to move the ball successfully but unable to score.
On Suburban's second possession, however, speedy wideout Nathaniel Cross beat the defenders to the corner on a sweep and took off down the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown run.
In the second quarter, the Trojans (5-3, 3-2 Division II) extended their lead when workhorse back Cody Waltimyer found himself running to daylight and scoring on a 55-yard run of his own for a 14-0 lead.
Waltimyer finished the night with 176 yards on 20 carries.
"Number 37 is a heck of a football player," Kerr said of Waltimyer. "Usually when he has the ball, you're gonna get positive yardage."
It didn't seem to bother Kerr that his passing game produced only 11 yards for his offense, since Susquehannock (2-6, 2-2) couldn't keep the Trojan rushers from gaining ground in large swaths.
"We knew Susquehannock
In addition to Waltimyer's big night, both Cross and quarterback Elijah Porcher finished with 93 rushing yards apiece.
In the third quarter, Suburban took advantage of a Warriors fumble, and Waltimyer punched it in from the 1-yard line for his second TD of the night.
The Warriors' offense was efficient for most of the night, converting 19 first downs. But Susquehannock turned the ball over three times and simply lacked the big-play ability of Suburban.
Quarterback Patrick Miller finished with 12 completions to five different receivers, and running back Jordan Robertson scored on a 1-yard plunge on fourth down at the eight-minute mark in the fourth quarter for the Warriors. But an onside kick was recovered by Suburban. With the final score set at 21-7, the Trojans used Waltimyer to run out the clock.
