YORK SPRINGS -- Just 27 seconds into Bermudian Springs' game against Susquehannock on Friday night, it looked like the Eagles were in for a long night.
Quarterback Jordan Selfe threw an interception to Susquehannock defensive back Brandon Jones.
On the next play, Warriors quarterback Patrick Miller threw a 19-yard touchdown to Tyler Ward and, just like that, Susquehannock was on top.
But Bermudian Springs battled back with a touchdown on its next drive, marching 70 yards in 11 plays and ultimately turning the tide as the Eagles (5-1) pulled out a 21-14 YAIAA non-divisional victory against visiting Susquehannock (1-5).
"It came down to heart, and it came down to determination," said Bermudian Springs wide receiver/defensive back Jacob Stimer.
Running back Derek Mummert scored from 5 yards out to even the score and finished with 24 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown on the night.
"(The offensive line) just blew holes open. It was a team effort," Mummert said.
Susquehannock, meanwhile, put together a strong effort in its first game without former head coach Tom Waranavage, who resigned Thursday for undisclosed reasons after 4 1/2 seasons at the helm.
"We are playing a little bit better than what 1-5 would be," Warriors interim head coach Jerry Higgins said after Friday's game.
Higgins -- previously an assistant at Susquehannock -- said that he will be interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Reached by phone on Saturday morning, Southern York County School District superintendent Thomas R. Hensley said: "On Thursday, Mr. Waranavage submitted his resignation as the head football coach for personal reasons. We all want to thank Mr. Waranavage for his years of service and his contributions to our football program and we wish him the best in all his future endeavors."
The Warriors were 35-13 in 4 1/2 seasons under Waranavage, who was the head coach at Biglerville before coming to Susquehannock in 2004.
After Friday's game was tied at 7-7 in the first quarter, Miller threw an interception to Stimer on the Warriors' next possession.
It was one of two interceptions for Stimer.
After the interception, Selfe threw a 29-yard score to Preston Green to give Bermudian Springs a 14-7 lead.
From there, the Bermudian Springs defense buckled down and forced Susquehannock into five straight scoreless possessions.
"I expected a battle tonight, and that's what we got," said Eagles coach Jon DeFoe.
Selfe threw another touchdown to Stimer, extending the Eagles' lead to 21-7 heading into halftime.
"Week after week, a different guy makes plays for us at critical times," DeFoe said.
Susquehannock scored the only other points of the game late in the third after marching 72 yards. Running back Jordan Robertson scampered for a 40-yard touchdown to bring the game within one possession and inspire a bit of fear into the Eagles' fan base.
But Bermudian ate up the clock on its last few possessions, gaining enough first downs to put the game out of reach.
"Our goal is to be 9-1," Stimer said.
The Eagles host Biglerville (4-2, 2-1 Division III) next week.
"It's a huge rivalry. They're 4-2. We're 5-1. Come Friday night, it's going to be electric here," DeFoe said.
