Faced with the all-too-familiar reality of an upset in the making, Bermudian Springs made sure to give itself a gut-check at halftime against York County Tech on Saturday when it was only leading by a touchdown.
It was only two weeks ago that the Eagles were in the same position, only on the other side of things against South Western.
Bermudian Springs head football coach Jon DeFoe was aware of the potential for disaster, so he made sure to remind his team at intermission what was on the line.
The Eagles got the hint, and responded in the second half, scoring midway through the third and twice more in the fourth en route to a 28-0 victory at Spartans Field.
"I told them, 'We know this position, when you're considered a big underdog like we were that week (at South Western), and you want to shorten the game up," said DeFoe, whose team beat the Mustangs 10-7 two weeks ago. "At 7-0, any one play can win the football game."
The weather certainly didn't help. The majority of the game was played through a downpour.
York Tech (0-4, 0-2 Div. III), which had yet to play a close game this season, actually used the weather to its advantage. The Spartans loaded the box early and often, knowing the Eagles (4-1, 2-0) would call run. They succeeded with their defensive scheme.
"Today was tough," DeFoe said. "I know the conditions were the same (for both teams). But when a team puts eight and nine guys at the line of scrimmage -- we
Aside from Preston Green's 80-yard scurry to the house in the first quarter, Bermudian was rendered largely ineffective. The Eagles fumbled three times in the first half, losing two of them, and Jordan Selfe also threw an interception.
But what the Eagles relied on, and what ultimately made the difference, was their defense. York Tech was just as inept on offense.
The Spartans punted the ball six times, threw two interceptions, lost two fumbles, muffed a punt and turned the ball over on downs.
The first half wasn't pretty, but at least the Eagles knew they had the lead.
In the third quarter, when the sky opened up for the first time, albeit shortly, Bermudian made its first push after forcing the Spartans to punt on their first possession.
Derek Mummert and Jeisson Lloret platooned running duties through a 6-play,45-yard drive ending with a 7-yard Mummert touchdown, pushing the lead to 14-0.
In the fourth, after the Eagles recovered a Devon Talley fumble in scoring position at the 21, Mummert took a hand-off the very next play and busted through a couple of tackles en route to a 21-yard touchdown.
The Eagles added a late interception return for a touchdown with seconds left in the fourth to complete the strong second half.
