The unbeaten William Penn Bearcats put their exceptional offense on display again Friday night, soundly defeating host Dover, 66-23, in a YAIAA Division I game.
Things started quickly for the visitors, as Andre Callum scored twice within nine seconds in the first quarter. The first score came on an 80-yard punt return after Dover's failed opening drive. The second came on Dover's next play from scrimmage, when Callum scooped up a fumbled option pitch and took it 11 yards for six points. The Bearcats lead 14-0, and the William Penn offense hadn't even seen the field.
William Penn (5-0, 2-0) scored in a more conventional way on its next possession, capping a 48-yard drive with a 10-yard Brandon Walker touchdown run. The senior fullback would anchor the offense Friday, carrying the ball 13 times for 132 yards and three touchdowns.
Things were looking grim for Dover (0-5, 0-2) early, as it trailed 20-0, but a lucky break came the Eagles' way on their next possession, as a pass thrown by Steven Ferry was tipped by a defender into the hands of Eagle wideout Andy Wolfgang, who sprinted down the left sideline 73 yards for the score.
In the second quarter, the William Penn passing game came into play under the efficient management of Jordan Davis, who hit Montell Fullerton for a 47-yard touchdown, extending the Bearcats' lead to 26-7.
The Eagles would not go away, though. On its next possession, Dover rallied behind the running of star halfback Vaughn Hebron, who scored on a 1-yard dive.
William Penn seemed to falter a bit because of penalties in the second quarter, and the Eagles managed a field goal as the half ended, setting the score at 34-16.
Asked if he was concerned that his team accumulated 80 penalty yards in the first half, William Penn coach Matt Ortega had an interesting response.
"It's a concern, but it's not," Ortega said. "I just think at some point in time the York County refereeing committee, they have to look at things and watch what's going on.
"Every week it's just three to four questionable calls that just never went our way," Ortega continued. "Something's got to be done about it. It's a shame for our poor kids. We just want fair officiating. The offsides were definitely on us, but a couple of the clips were very, very questionable, and the pass interference -- they were horrible calls."
Hebron finished the game with another good showing, accumulating 113 yards on 17 carries, but it wasn't enough against the tough-running Walker and the lightning-fast Bearcat team, which managed nearly 500 yards of offense for the game.
The second half saw five more Bearcat touchdowns, including a 26-yard run by Walker, another Davis-to-Fullerton hook-up for 50 yards and the score and a 30-yard run by backup quarterback Kelvin Parker on a broken play.
