After an opening-week loss, Central York was facing questions.
Four weeks later, the Panthers are replacing those question marks with exclamation points.
Central reeled off its fourth straight victory Friday night, rolling to a 61-0 victory over New Oxford in a contest never really in doubt. The victory sets up a Division I showdown next week between the Panthers and unbeaten Dallastown.
"We got our stuff together after the first game," Central tailback D.J. Harrison said, referring to the Week 1 loss to West York. "That was a wake-up call. We just started clicking on offense after that."
Harrison is a big reason the Panthers (4-1, 2-0) are clicking on offense. The senior piled up five touchdowns on just 11 touches Friday night, with four scores coming on the ground and another coming on a 42-yard connection with quarterback Brandon Workinger.
"What was fun was watching our athletic kids make plays," Central head coach Brad Livingston said. "We've worked hard, we've gotten a lot better, and our kids are learning how to make plays."
Livingston's players put things out of reach almost immediately Friday night, as they scored on each of their three first-quarter possessions. The first was the most methodical, a 6-play, 61-yard drive culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run by Harrison. A three-and-out by New Oxford (1-4, 0-2) gave way to another Harrison touchdown, this one coming from 42 yards away on a nice catch-and-run. One more New Oxford
"We have to go back to the drawing board," New Oxford head coach Matt Muller said. "We played at a high level last week against Dallastown, and that is who I thought we were. Then we come down here, and I can't really get a read on this."
Central picked up another score 16 seconds into the second, when L'Mar Calhoun made a nifty 55-yard punt return for a touchdown -- the second consecutive week Calhoun has returned a punt for a score. Calhoun nearly struck again on the very next punt, with a 45-yard return that put the Panthers at the New Oxford 14.
"He has a lot of poise and a lot of confidence back there," Livingston said. "The kids that are in front of him are working to set up walls and block punts and doing everything they can to help him. They know if they help him a little bit, he's liable to go all the way."
Two plays after Calhoun's return set the Panthers up deep in Colonial territory, Workinger found Charles Anderson (121 rushing yards) in the corner of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown pass and a 34-0 Central lead. The scoring throw was part of an efficient night from Workinger, who was a tidy 6-for-6 for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
Harrison capped the first-half scoring with a 36-yard touchdown run, ensuring a running clock for the entire second half. The senior added a 38-yard scoring run on his second and final touch of the second half. Anderson and Brandon Baker added second-half touchdown runs.
