Red Lion football coach Pat Conrad said Thursday that starting quarterback Chad Kelly is no longer on the team after a decision made by the school earlier this week.
"I can't really discuss it," Conrad said after confirming that the freshman is not playing for his squad, and the move was not his decision, but declining to expand further. "I've been told by other people that I can't discuss it at all."
The only freshman listed on the roster last week, Kelly made his varsity debut starting at quarterback against William Penn, leading the Lions in rushing with 66 yards in the 48-19 defeat. The freshman went 12-of-26 through the air for 145 yards and one interception and one touchdown.
Kelly is the nephew of NFL Hall of Fame
quarterback Jim Kelly.
The Lions (1-3, 0-1 YAIAA Division I) host Spring Grove (1-3, 0-1 Division I) tonight at 7 as they look to jump start their playoff chances. Last season Red Lion finished 6-4 overall and barely qualified for the 16-team District 3 Class AAAA tournament as the No. 15 seed.
Senior Michael Wiertel started the first three games at quarterback for Red Lion, going 11-of-32 for 128 yards, throwing three interceptions and no touchdown passes over the three contests.
When asked what effect Kelly's departure will have on the Lions, Conrad reiterated that he could not go into any detail.
"I really can't," Conrad said. "I don't want to say anything."
