FAIRFIELD -- Five different running backs scored for Bermudian Springs in its 49-6 thrashing of Fairfield on Friday night.

"We're really trying to be balanced," Eagles head coach Jon DeFoe said. "Through the first three weeks our halfbacks were almost dead even in carries."

Bermudian Springs (3-1, 1-0 Division III) blew open a close game in the third quarter by scoring 21 points.

The Eagles only led the Green Knights by a 14-0 margin at halftime, before picking up their offensive production in the second half.

"You have to give Fairfield credit. They played hard. We were fortunate to be up 14-0," DeFoe said. "At halftime we challenged the kids and said if we want to be a contender in the division, we can't afford to take halves off."

It only took the Eagles two plays to score once the second half began.

Following a 52-yard run by Derek Mummert down to the Knights' 20, Preston Green ran a sweep around the left side and scampered in for his second touchdown of the night with 11:19 to play in the third quarter.

However, Fairfield (0-4, 0-1) responded with its only score of the night just 19 seconds later.

Following a 76-yard kickoff return by Travis Stambaugh down to the Eagles' 9-yard line, Derek Smith found the end zone for the Knights.

But that would be as close to the lead as the Knights would get as four more rushing touchdowns by Bermudian put the game away.

"I'm very proud of the kids, they gave Bermudian all they could

handle for 21/2 quarters," Fairfield head coach Mike Quealy said. "They're where we want to be in the future."

Bermudian scored on its next possession to answer right back with a seven play, 67-yard drive, capped by Green's third score of the night, a 22-yard blast right up the middle of the field that put the Eagles ahead 28-6.

Green finished with 68 yards on nine carries and also had three receptions for 33 yards.

The final score of the third quarter came on Adam Stroup's 19-yard run with 1:22 to play. Stroup took the option pitch from quarterback Jordan Selfe and raced up the right sideline and dove for the pylon in the end zone.

Stroup finished with 42 yards on the ground and had a game-high 93 yards receiving.

"Adam's a really unselfish player," DeFoe said. "He makes plays out of the carries we give him."

Mummert finished with a game-high 117 rushing yards on 12 attempts and one score. The Eagles rushed for 326 yards on 43 attempts.

"We're heading in the right direction," DeFoe said.
