York Catholic's Sean Obermeier was a busy man Friday night as his Fighting Irish rolled over visiting York County Tech, 39-0.
In addition to his 91 rushing yards, the senior tailback/kicker/defensive back added four extra points, one field goal (he missed two other attempts) and a spectacular 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown after ripping the ball from a receiver's arms on his own 2-yard line. He even attempted a pass for a two-point conversion after a bad extra point hold.
Very little went right for the Spartans this night. They managed only one first down in the first half and four for the entire game.
They also had a problem with turnovers, losing three fumbles, all leading to Irish touchdowns, including Obermeier's.
York Catholic quickly sprang to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, led by the efficient passing of Adam Sentz, who had all of his 41 yards through the air in the first period of play.
The Irish then turned to their running game and fed off the Spartans' mistakes.
In the second quarter, the only points came on a safety, when a bad snap sailed over the York Tech punter's head and out of the end zone. Following the free kick, the Spartan defense stiffened, and a missed Obermeier field goal ended the half, but the Irish took the lead into the locker room, 19-0.
York Tech's misfortune was not limited to the first two quarters, however. York Catholic had deferred to receive the kickoff to start the second half, and senior
Four minutes later, the Spartans finally seemed to get it together behind the strong running of Devon Talley, who finished with 123 of the York Tech's 139 total yards. But when they attempted to pass the ball for the touchdown, the great defensive play of Obermeier foiled their efforts.
When asked if it was difficult to kick an extra point after running 98 yards, an exhausted but smiling, Obermeier said, "Yeah. It's hard."
York Catholic coach J.D. Martin seemed pleased with some aspects of his team's play, but he acknowledged that there were weaknesses in the Irish game.
"We put points on the board, and we ran the ball, completed some passes," said Martin. "The negative? We missed blocks ... blew some blocking assignments, got people in the backfield off their blitzes and so forth. So we've got to pick that up. We can't afford to have that happen."
Senior halfback Frank Paolantonio took over the rushing duties in the fourth quarter, gaining 45 yards capped by a weaving 6-yard run to set the final tally at 39-0.
The hardest working man in the game, Obermeier said, "We did a lot of things wrong, but we've just gotta bounce back against Kennard-Dale. We've gotta bounce back after Suburban. We've gotta come out and win the division."
