South Western relied on its offensive line Friday night, and it came through.
The Mustangs' line opened hole after hole for the stable of running backs as South Western racked up 345 yards on the ground on its way to a 51-21 win over Dover.
J.R. Mummert had 128 of those rushing yards and scored one touchdown
"His greatest attribute is his second and third move. It is phenomenal," South Western coach Don Seidenstricker said "You can't coach that."
All night Mummert bounced off Dover tacklers, gaining more yards after first contact.
Jeb Shipley also gained more than 100 yards with 108. Shipley got 25 of those yards on a third-quarter touchdown run. A third running back came close with Chris Helwig gaining 78 yards on 12 carries.
In all, the Mustangs had 56 carries on the ground and didn't punt the entire game.
Most of the game was played without starting quarterback David Sager, who left the game in the second quarter. Seidenstricker said they thought Sager's injury was a foot sprain, but Sager will need X-rays.
Sager did throw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Drew Sneeringer in the first quarter after Dover fumbled the ball back to the Mustangs on the 41-yard line.
His replacement, Ian Smith, didn't miss a beat, guiding the Mustangs up and down the field with the help from his running backs.
Dover running back Vaughn Hebron had 97 yards rushing at halftime, but thanks to a big lead and a couple of long Mustang drives, he didn't break 100 yards
But South Western was up 24-0 before Hebron reached the end zone for the first time.
Zac Scott and Helwig each had 5-yard runs for scores in the first half. The Mustangs, who were coming off a two-game losing streak, had seven players reach the end zone. Kicker Zak Kruger also nailed a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter.
"Yes, we're 2-2," Seidenstricker said. "But we're not far from 4-0."
