LOWER GWYNEDD –—In an offensive slugfest between the Lansdale Catholic and Bonner-Prendergast football teams Friday night at Wissahickon, it was the Friars' Joe DePhillipo who provided the biggest punch.
The senior running back compiled 262 yards on 21 carries and scored twice in the second half as Bonner-Prendergast handed the Crusader their first loss, winning the Philadelphia Catholic League Class AAA contest 47-35.
“The kid's a hell of player. You can talk about him and you can watch him on film, but it comes down to stopping him,” LC coach Tom Kirk said of DePhillipo. “I love the way that kids plays. I admire the heck out of him, but it's not just one guy that's going to ever bring him down.”
Ryan Quigley scored four touchdowns — two rushing, two receiving — for the Crusaders (5-1, 0-1 division), who were trying to start 6-0 for the first time since 2006. The Crusaders held a 28-14 lead late in the second quarter, but Collin DiGalbo's 29-yard touchdown pass to Mike Ockimey as time expired in the half was the start of 26 straight points for the visitors.
“I thought it was huge right before half to be able to go 80 on three plays and get one in,” Bonner-Prendergast coach Greg Bernhardt said. “And then we went in and challenged them at halftime and said ‘Let's go, this is our game to go out and get.'”
On the opening drive of the third quarter the Friars (2-4, 1-0) got within 28-26 when DePhillipo capped off a six-play, 63-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run at 8:51.
LC appeared set to answer back with a touchdown — moving the ball down to the Friar one — but a false start, an incompletion, and a fourth-down run three yards short of the goal line gave Bonner a big defensive stop. Two plays later it became even bigger, as DePhillipo broke away down the right sideline for a 73-yard scamper down to the LC 24.
“Defensively, to step up like that, that was huge,” Bernhardt said. “And the first down, we had play action up top to Ockimey and we had him and Collin threw to the other side (for an incompletion). So, it was kind of like it was a frustrating point and then the next play we go for, you know, 95 yards, 80 yards — whatever it was.”
Two plays later, DiGalbo put the Friars up for good, scoring from 11 yards out, then running in the two-point conversion with had Bonner up 34-28 with 30.2 seconds left in the quarter.
DePhillipo made it a 40-28 lead on the Friars' next drive, taking the ball around the right side, cutting back across the field, then outrunning the LC defense down the left sideline to score on an 86-yard run at 10:38.
Lansdale Catholic pulled to within 40-35 just 17 seconds later. Phil Seger returned a short kickoff down to the BP 4, where Quigley scored from at 10:21. But the Friars responded with a nine-play, 58-yard drive that DiGalbo capped off with a one-yard TD run at 6:08 for a 47-35 advantage.
“We played them three times in the last two years and they beat us all three times,” Kirk said. “They're a very good team. The kids know that they were a very good team. They came tonight and they showed it.
“We just have to, from here, you except it, you move on and then you just get ready for your next game.”
For the Crusaders, that is Archbishop Wood, which LC hosts Saturday. Bonner-Prendergast's next contest is also Saturday against Imhotep Charter
DiGalbo was 8-for-15 pass for 89 yard and two touchdowns and also ran 12 times for 77 yards and three scores.
Pinzka threw three touchdowns – two to Quigley, another to Mike Isabella – as he finished 5-for-14 for 106 yards and two interceptions.
“I thought Joe Pinzka did a terrific job in throwing the football tonight, reading the coverage,” Kirk said. “Some of the touchdowns that we had were reads that he made.”
Quigley paced the Crusaders on the ground with 81 yards and two scores on 19 carries. Mike Iacono had 61 yards on 10 carries.
Lansdale Catholic used its passing attack to grab a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
On the game's opening drive, Pinzka connected with Isabella for a 21-yard score at 10:11, a block kicking making it 6-0. LC's junior quarterback hit Quigley over the middle for a 47-yard touchdown at 5:36, with Pinzka running in the two-point conversion.
Bonner-Prendergast pulled level midway through the second quarter. A Mike Shanahan interception set the Friars up at the Crusader 3 and two plays later DiGalbo crossed the goal line from a yard out with 1:34 left in the first quarter. At 6:17 in the second, Bonner-Prendie made it 14-14 after DiGalbo's 10-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Higgins finished a 12-play, 78-yard drive.
The Crusaders regained the lead at 4:50 when Pinzka found Quigley for a 30-yard touchdown, with LC going up 28-14 when Quigley leaped into the end zone from a yard out with 25.6 second left.
Starting out their own 40 at 19.1, the Friars used two plays to get to the LC 29 with 3.5 ticks remaining. DiGalbo tossed a passed towards the end zone's left sideline, where Ockimey was there to haul it in. A blocked kick put Lansdale Catholic's halftime lead at 28-20.
