Sam Brown scored twice in a two-minute span and Nate Hughes picked up three assists in a late offensive explosion, allowing Penncrest to pull away from host Interboro, 5-2, Friday in a nonleague boys soccer season opener.
Brown, who added one assist, tied the match with nine minutes to go in regulation and netted the go-ahead goal two minutes later to open the floodgates for the Lions. Ricky Volger, Brendan O'Boyle and Luca DiFranco also scored in support of goalkeeper Liam Thomas, who finished with five saves.
The Bucs held the lead until late thanks to goals by Kyle Dutch and Roberto Sanchez and solid goaltending by Chase Rodriguez (seven saves).
In other nonleague action:
Marple Newtown 7, Chichester 0: George Lambritsios and Dominic Pezzotti scored two goals apiece, Hunter Dyson and Dean Giovanopoulos each added a goal and a pair of assists, and Mark Lee and Ben Staud combined on the shutout for the host Tigers.
