CENTRAL CITY - McConnellsburg played Shade evenly in the first quarter, but the top-seeded Panthers pulled away the rest of the game to win, 78-49, in the District 5 Class A boys basketball first round on Thursday night.

The score was 14-14 after one quarter. Then the Spartans got into foul trouble and things started to go downhill.

McConnellsburg coach Dennis Swope said, "I had to bench my point guard (Jesse Swope) in the second quarter because he was in foul trouble. We just seemed to lose it after that."

Shade (23-1) outscored the Spartans by 13 in the second quarter for a 33-20 halftime lead. The Panthers then poured it on, putting up 29 points in the third period for a 62-36 advantage.

Swope said, "They're a pretty good team, no doubt about it. They've only lost one game."

McConnellsburg (7-16) was led by Tyler Green with 24 points and eight rebounds. Jesse Swope was the only other Spartan to score in double figures, adding 10 points.

The Panthers got a game-high 27 points - including four 3-pointers - from Ryan Fyock. Shade hit 10 shots from beyond the arc.
