The Chambersburg Trojans' Abby Zeger has been a gymnast since she was 2 years old.
Her mother, Terri, enrolled her in a "Mommy & Me" gymnastics because, as Abby put it, "I was very flexible when I was little."
As a ninth-grader, Zeger has retained much of her flexibility, apparently. Last weekend, at the Pennsylvania Classics state meet, she finished fifth in the all-around in the Bronze Division.
She is Public Opinion's Female Athlete of the Week.
Zeger took fifth in the vault, eighth in the bars and ninth on the beam at the Classic, held at Moon Area High School.
Chambersburg coach Michelle Jones said after the meet, "Abby really showed it tonight. She was fantastic on the vault, with her season-high score. She has a lot to be proud of tonight."
Zeger said she was happy with the way things went at the state meet.
"It was a good experience," she said. "It was good to be with all of the other teams from around the state and to see how far I can go as a gymnast."
Zeger performed at the Wilson School of Gymnastics as she was growing up, reaching Level 6. She said it helped her make the transition to high school gymnastics in more ways that one.
"It was easier (to adjust) since I already knew a lot of the gymnasts, because they also went to Wilson," she said. "I enjoyed my first season for the high school team. It was fun to compete at all the meets."
Zeger said she likes the floor exercises the best, and wants to improve her skills in the other events. Her high school coach has high expectations for her.
Jones said, "She has come so far. She was very reserved at the beginning of the season. She has improved by leaps and bounds. I expect to see great things from her over the next three years."
To get ready for next season, Zeger said she will do open gym at Wilson. She added that she is also thinking of going out for the Chambersburg track team.
