Gettysburg High senior Phineas O'Brien-Milne discovered Friday that he was suffering from a sinus infection.

Yet that wasn't about to keep him from helping himself and Gettysburg's boys from a few goals at Saturday's Mid-Penn Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School, New Kingstown.

"I decided to stay off antibiotics for today. I didn't want a lot of drip coming down my throat," O'Brien-Milne, wearing the eighth-place medal he won in the 100-yard butterfly, said. "I'm not feeling terrible today. I woke up after I got a lot of sleep."

Seeded sixth in the event, O'Brien-Milne posted a time of 55.72 seconds to receive the lone medal won by a Gettysburg swimmer in Saturday's meet.

"I'm not necessarily 100 percent. I don't want that to take away from my swim," he said.

Instead, Gettysburg head coach Amanda Turner was pleased with that effort and a few others.

"I'm really happy the boys broke their (school) record again for the 200 free (style) relay," she said. "That was one of their main goals coming in."

That group included O'Brien-Milne, who teamed with Jack Tully, Tyler Konstalid and Derek Ondrizek for a 10th-place time of 1:34.01.

O'Brien-Milne, who also took 11th in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.56, said his relay leg of 22.46 seconds came at a good time for him.

"Coming into the fly, I was a little bit tired because there was an awkward time gap between the IM and the fly," he said. "I got to rest a little bit, but I'd have rather stayed up at a high energy level than rest and try to get back up, so I think that might have affected me a little bit, especially being sick.

"But coming from the fly into the 200 free really helped me because I had a lot of energy, a lot of focus," he said.

O'Brien-Milne also was a member of the Warriors' 400 freestyle relay team which placed 10th with another school record of 3:27.95. The other swimmes in that effort were Jason Altman, Konstalid and Ondrizek.

That was O'Brien-Milne's last effort of the day, after which he planned to focus on his health.

"As soon as I get home," he said about taking the prescribed medicine. "I've got to get ready for districts."

Meanwhile, Hershey captured the team championships for both boys and girls. The former team was paced by Vinny Tafuto's meet records in the 50 and 100 freestyles. The latter group was led by Madelyn Veith, who set a meet record in the 50 freestyle, and Vivi Tafuto, who broke the meet standard in the 100 breaststroke. Both also swam on the record-setting 200 freestyle relay team.
