FREDERICK, Md. - St. John's Catholic Prep took charge from the get-go on Monday night, defeating Mercersburg Academy 57-27 in the IPSL (Independent Parochial School League) girls basketball championship game.

The Vikings buried Mercersburg in the first quarter, outscoring the Blue Storm 26-1. Their 6-foot-4 center, Christine Hagan, had a lot to do with their success - she swatted a total of 12 shots in the game.

Mercersburg assistant coach David Bell said, "They pressed us hard in the first quarter and they got a lot of blocked shots, which put us totally out of rhythm. They took us out of the game right from the start."

For the Blue Storm (13-6), Melody Gomez scored 15 points, had eight rebounds and eight steals. Teal Tasker (of Chambersburg) added eight points.

Bell said, "They clearly wanted it more than we did. They were the highest seed in the league and they showed why they deserved to be champs."

The Vikings (13-7) got balanced scoring, with three girls having 10 points (Beth-Ann Pierce, Paige Holston, Hailey Greene) and two others with nine points (Mariama Kleta, Rachel Archer).
