The local Class AA logjam at 138 pounds has cleared.

Hanover's Ian Brown and Fairfield's Cameron Scalio plan to move to 132 for the upcoming PIAA individual postseason tournaments. PA Power Wrestling has ranked them, Bermudian Springs's Austin Jackson and Biglerville's Jasper Hankey in the top 20 at 138.

"I think it's better for him," Green Knights coach E.J. Small said of Scalio. "They're really good kids. Not that we can't wrestle them, but it would be easier for us to get out of sectionals and districts."

Scalio has already reached his goal weight, finishing second in Saturday's New Oxford Invitational. Brown beat Line Mountain's Seth Lansberry, 2-1, for the 138-pound title.

South Western tied Mechanicsburg for first with 132.5 points. Gettysburg finished sixth with 103 points, New Oxford was seventh at 92, Fairfield was eighth at 89 and Hanover placed 19th with 48.

South Western's Owen Wherley (106), Aram Moffitt (220) and Devon Ackerman (285) and Gettysburg's Clay Kocsis (152) were the only other local wrestlers to win their weight classes.

The drops for Brown and Scalio will provide other benefits. If they maintain a weight around 134 pounds -- the maximum allowed for wrestlers competing at 132 -- they'll be among the heaviest competitors and test opponents' endurance. They will also likely have more strength because they are not cutting muscle mass.

Of course, Brown and Scalio will have little margin for error in making weight before tournaments, and they will have to deal with the effects of cutting weight, such as dehydration.

Scalio's drop comes after starting the school year around 155 pounds and the season around 144. He wrestled at 138, but Small decided to drop him again.

"It was hard to get to '38,'" Scalio said. "The most I had ever cut was to '44. Once Coach told me, I had my mind set on it. It made it a lot easier."

His diet helped. He ate a lot of yogurt, applesauce and popsicles and drank enough water to satiate a convoy of camels crossing the Sahara.

"Stuff that'll come right out, stuff I can sweat right out," Scalio said. "I don't eat sandwiches and stuff because it sticks to me."

Brown decided to drop down because he thought that might give him the best chance to win a state championship after finishing fourth the last two years. He admitted to feeling some fatigue in beating Lansberry, who reached the third round of the 132-pound PIAA Class AA consolation bracket last year.

"I feel pretty good," Brown said. "I'm trying to peak at the right time. I'm working my way up the hill. I'm slowly progressing my workouts and making sure I'm ready for the second week in March. I feel I have a good shot (while weighing) 134 to win a state title. That's what it's all about."
