Brett Smith took the court Tuesday night 13 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point plateau for his high school basketball career.
Despite an off-night shooting and with two minutes, 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Smith took the ball at the top of the key, crossed over to his left, drove past his defender and nailed a runner to give him career points 1,000 and 1,001.
That was just one of the many highlights for the Squires, who dominated Hanover in all facets of the game en route to a 57-34 win.
"It feels great," Smith said in regard to reaching the milestone. "I was kind of forcing it a little bit with those last two shots just to kind of get it done and over with. I wasn't sure if that was going to go in or
After Smith scored, play stopped as the crowd gave Smith a standing ovation. After receiving the ball he used to score the point, he took it to his family and was greeted with congratulatory hugs.
Smith said scoring his 1,000th against rival Hanover added a little extra.
No one might have been happier for Smith than Delone head coach Jim Dooley.
"What is really extraordinary is that he is not a scorer," Dooley said. "He is a distributor, a facilitator. It is very rare, especially the way I play, that your point guard gets 1,000 points."
As for the opportunity for Smith to have his moment, Dooley just wishes it would have happened when the Squires' last 1,000-point scorer, Chris Hartmann, reached the 1,000-point milestone in 2009.
"We did not manage Chris' moment when he got it here, and it has bothered me for five years," Dooley said. "We did a good job this time. (Smith) has been a terrific guy. He has been the best all-around athlete that I have coached since Darian Golden at Gettysburg."
Hanover closed a six-point, second-quarter deficit to one with just more than two minutes left when Delone took over. The Squires scored the last six points of the half to take a 25-18 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the half, the Squires held Hanover scoreless for the first 3 1/2 minutes while going on an 8-0 run and extending the lead to 33-18.
"Coach told us that we can't let them get on a run," Smith said. "He told us that we had to be the team that came out of the half and put the game away and we did that."
Delone dominated the glass all night long, outrebounding Hanover, 44-27, something that has been a point of emphasis for a Delone squad that lacks team height.
"We do a lot of drills in practice on rebounding," said Devin Altland, who had eight rebounds. "Get those boards and get out and run. It is what we do well. Against a team with a big front line like Hanover, we just have to box them out."
The Squires' pressure defense was extremely effective in locking down Hanover's leading scorers, Nick Trish and Dylan Krieger, both of whom average 15 points. On Tuesday, Delone held them to six points combined.
"It gives us a lot of confidence," Altland said. "That is one of our main goals, shut down their guys, and tonight we did that."
Tuesday's contest was a very physical battle on both ends of the court with very few fouls being called, leaving Dooley scratching his head.
"I have no comprehension as to what a foul is," he
Fortunately for the Squires, when they did get to the line, they shot 12-for-14.
For Smith, he can enjoy having his 1,000th point come during a win.
"It was amazing to do it at home," he said. "It is a great feeling. I was thinking about how many great players have scored 1,000 points here. It is awesome to be a part of that group. There are some tremendous basketball players in that group."
