The Eastern York girl's basketball team has certainly shown some perseverance throughout this season.

Not satisfied with their record coming into their own Eastern York Rotary Club Holiday Tournament, the Golden Knights were on a mission. And for the squad, it seems all of the pieces are starting to fall together.

"We really practiced a lot of patience this week," Eastern head coach Cheryl Land said. "We really exercised patience, mostly on the offensive end, looking for a really high percentage shot, and I think we ran the floor pretty well."

Eastern York bested a tough Susquehannock team, 51-39, in the championship game of the tournament to keep the title in house and gain some much-needed momentum for the back half of the season.

The Knights tamed a tenacious Warriors defense and seemed to not be fazed by the full court pressure of the visitors that had stymied Kennard Dale in the previous round.

"Hopefully we're going to ride that momentum into league play against a worthy opponent in Kennard Dale (next Friday)," Land said. "We knew we were playing a really strong team (Susquehannock) so it's a good win for us and a good win to propel us into the (rest of the) season."

Golden Knight senior Liz Myers finished with 34 points during the two nights and was named tournament MVP.

In the consolation game, Kennard Dale used a 21-point fourth quarter to pull away from Cedar Crest with a 46-37 win.

The championship game was much too close to call in the first half, with Susquehannock taking a minute 22-20 lead into the intermission.

Eastern York came out of the locker room on a tear in the third quarter, scoring 13 points in the frame but more importantly holding the potent Warriors offense to just five points in the third.

"We really worked as a team, both nights actually, and this tournament really boosts our confidence a lot," Eastern junior Morgan Thomas said. "We really weren't clicking as much until this tournament. I'm really glad how we all played, everyone contributed."

Thomas paced the hosts with eight of her 15 points coming in the fourth quarter.

"I've been practicing, or preaching I should say, versatility, versatility, versatility. We want to be a versatile squad, and our girls know that anybody at any given time can score, and we feel confident about that," Land said.

Katie Wagner kept the Warriors in the contest in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of her teams 12 points in the quarter.

A big part of the win was a stellar Golden Knights defense that kept junior Shannon Druck, who poured in 16 points the previous night against Kennard-Dale, to just nine first-half points.

Druck and Wagner both earned all-tournament team honors.

Kennard-Dale senior, and UMBC-commit, Sara Tarbert scored a game high 27-points in the consolation game.

The Rams, down by one at the half, tied the score at 25 after three quarters and handed the ball to Tarbert, who scored 14 of her teams 21 points in the final frame. Tarbert was also named to the all-tournament team.
