Thus far this season, the Hanover High Hawkettes have struggled finding continuity from their offense. When they have to set up a halfcourt offense, they have struggled.

On Thursday night, the Hawkettes turned to their defense to set up their offense and it paid off with a solid 49-24 win over the York Country Day Greyhounds at the Hawk House.

The game was part of the Hawkette Holiday Classic. The second game of the night was between the Red Land Patriots and the Bible Baptist Bobcats, with the Patriots coming away with a 71-20 win.

Hanover will play Red Land at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the championship after York Country Day and Bible Baptist play the consolation game at 6 p.m.

On Thursday, the Hawkettes had just too much depth in the backcourt for the Greyhounds to handle. Going six deep, the Hawkettes kept up constant pressure on the Country Day guards.

A foul shot by Mackenzie Naill and a basket by Soukaina Tracy at the end of the first quarter gave Hanover a 11-5 lead. The Hawkettes kept the lead the rest of the game.

The Greyhounds made it a 13-9 game with four minutes left in the second quarter. That's when the Hawks took control by scoring the next 15 points. Tracy was especially active as she scored 10 of those 15. All but one of the points was scored by a Hanover guard off a steal.

"We were able to cause a lot of turnovers," Hanover coach Denny Garman said. "We want to try to make the other teams play faster than they are used to. It's a new press we have been working on this year and we are slowly starting to understand it. Defensively, we can go really deep. Our girls have bought in to the defense-first system. Overall, the team can go 11 deep defensively."

The Hawks kept up the pressure after halftime as Hanover was able to stretch its lead to 44-18 at the end of three quarters.

With both teams playing reserves, the Greyhounds won their only quarter of the game with a 6-5 advantage in the fourth.

Tracy, a freshman, continued to shoulder a lot of the offense foe the Hawkettes with 16 points. Hanover put 10 players in the scoring column while the Greyhounds were led by Katelynn Giannaccini's eight points.

In the second game of the night, the Red Land Patriots had too much of everything for the Bible Baptist Bobcats.

Leading 17-4 after the first quarter, the Patriots scored 30 points in the second quarter to open up a 47-8 lead at the half. With the Bobcats having only one true ball handler in Mikala Brinson, the Patriots swarmed her every time she touched the ball. The strategy paid off with turnover after turnover. Those turnovers all turned into easy baskets.

The Bobcats were also lost the war of attrition as they only dress seven players. The Patriots, on the other hand, freely substituted all 12 players on their roster. Eleven reached the scoring column.

Red Land freshman Rileigh Devine took advantage of her playing time by leading all scorers with 16 points. Six-foot center Danielle June likewise took advantage of her height advantage to score 12 points in limited action. Bible Baptist's top effort was Heather Mentch's six points
