MERCERSBURG - James Buchanan is getting closer to its first win, but Shippensburg made seven of its nine free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Rockets 44-40 in a Mid Penn Colonial Division boys basketball game Monday night.

"We were in the game the whole way," JB coach Larry Strawoet said. "If we had made a few more free throws we could have had the lead. We keep knocking at the door, but we just haven't gone through it yet."

The Greyhounds (3-2, 2-1 MPC) broke to a 12-5 lead after one quarter, but the Rockets caught up in the second and it was close the rest of the way.

Reid Singhas scored seven of his 13 points in the fourth period and added 15 rebounds for Ship, and Bryce Hastings posted nine points.

Hound coach Ray Staver said, "Hastings played very well tonight. He made plays at both ends of the court and he hit 3 of 4 foul shots in the fourth quarter."

For James Buchanan (0-4, 0-2 MPC), Jake Muller scored 13 points and Garrett Malanka scored 10.

Strawoet said, "We need to make our breaks at crucial times and we haven't yet. We're 0-4, but we're improving."

Nick Smartt was impressive in defeat, scoring 31 points, including six 3-pointers Clingerman added 16 points and Brady Golden had 10 for Southern Fulton (2-2, 1-2 SHL) Jake Ashkettle had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists Hendershot said, "Defensively, we're going to have to get better.
