But a hastily-taken 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer by Cumberland Valley's Gray Kline found its way into the net and lifted the Eagles to a 50-49 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division boys basketball victory.
"He got it off in time, but he didn't really have a good look at it," Chambersburg coach Beau Gantz said. "It was a prayer, but it went in."
Williams - who finished with a career-high 25 points - almost single-handedly stolen a win for the Trojans.
Chambersburg (3-2, 1-2 MPC) fell behind by 14 points in the first half ("We didn't show up again," Gantz said), but outscored CV 13-4 in the third quarter to get back in it. The Trojans even held a one-point lead in the fourth period.
But a series of turnovers and missed shots, and a string of Eagle foul shots, enabled Cumberland Valley (5-1, 2-1 MPC) to grab a seven-point lead with less than a minute remaining.
That's when Williams got hot, knocking down three 3-pointers, including his last with just over 10 seconds left to tie the game, 47-47. Kyle Myers then stole the ball and fed Williams for a layup with six seconds left to give Chambersburg a 49-47 lead.
CV brought the ball quickly up the court.
"We didn't have any timeouts left and neither did they," Gantz said. "We played good defense on the way up - I thought the guy with the ball would shoot, but
Gantz was not happy with several aspects of his team's play - the Trojans committed 19 turnovers, and were doubled up in scoring at the foul line (Chambersburg was 9-for-16 and CV was 18-for-24).
"Those 19 turnovers are an albatross," Gantz said. "They were sitting back in a matchup zone and we still turned it over. No matter how much we practice it, we're still turning it over too much. That's frustrating.
"And we had some bad fouls near the end - we kept fouling their best foul shooter (Kline was 10 of 11). These are the things coaches have nightmares about. We've lost two games, both to teams we should have beaten."
Matt Tamanosky led CV with 21 points and Kline put in 17.
