It seems like so long ago that the family would gather around a radio and listen to a scratchy AM broadcast of a high school football game.

Starting this fall, fans will be able to listen to 10 local games on the Internet and watch them being livestreamed at the same time.

Public Opinion will supply the video action, while Mid Penn Broadcasting will do the play-by-play. The entire production will be available on the GameTimePa website (www.GameTimePa.com).

"We've come a long way from AM radio," said Garry Kline, whose company, Mid Penn Broadcasting, has been broadcasting football, basketball and Little League games online for several years. "I couldn't have imagined this conversation five years ago, especially with a newspaper."

Of course, since then, most newspapers have evolved into total media outlets, not just a printed paper.

Kline had been interested in combining his webcasts with livestreamed video since last year.

"Denver and Denton Cordell's dad was in the hospital (Johns Hopkins in Baltimore) and we thought it would have been great to put the Greencastle games on so he could see them," Kline said.

So, when Public Opinion committed to doing some livestreamed games this fall and came to Kline, he was very interested.

"Absolutely," Kline said. "We were happy when we got the call. It seems natural to have audio with the video."

Kline's group is scheduled to provide webcasts of all Chambersburg and Greencastle-Antrim football games this fall. All of those games are available on two websites (www.midpennbroadcasting.com and www.fmtrustonline.com).

The schedule of livestreamed games is a mix of Trojan and Blue Devil games, plus a Sept. 28 game that features Shippensburg at James Buchanan.

Chambersburg's games include home games vs. Waynesboro (Sept. 7), Carlisle (Oct. 12) and Mifflin County (Nov. 2), plus away games at Greencastle (this Friday) and Gettysburg (Sept. 14).

The G-A games include home games against Chambersburg (this Friday), Gettysburg (Sept. 21), West Perry (Oct. 5), Big Spring (Oct. 19) and Waynesboro (Oct. 26).

Because Kline's games have been available on several sites, he can't be sure of how big the audience has been.

"I do know that on just our site, we've had between 500 and 1,000 people tuning in," he said. "And the numbers were really good for the basketball playoffs games that were on the road last winter.

"We've been very fortunate to have F&M Trust as our major sponsor - that's how we've been able to do 50-plus games a year."

Now a game each week will be enhanced with live video. And Kline and Public Opinion are already making plans to do a joint venture for the basketball season.
