William Penn administrators are moving quickly to fill the vacancy left by former football coach Tim Hibbs, who resigned from his post this week.

Chaz Green, the school's athletic director, said Tuesday the York City school board will name a new interim football coach at its scheduled committee meeting tonight at 6 p.m.

Neither Green nor assistant athletic director Joe Chiodi would comment on possible replacements, although offensive coordinator and longtime Bearcats assistant Shawn Heinold is thought to be the likely candidate.

Whoever is hired will coach the rest of this season, Chiodi said. The district will make a decision on a full-time hire after the season is over.

Hibbs submitted his resignation as football coach this week, less than a month after his job as a social studies teacher at William Penn was furloughed by the district. Hibbs coached just one season with the Bearcats, going 6-5 last fall.

It didn't take the former Biglerville coach long to find a new gig. Hibbs has already accepted an assistant coaching job at Gettysburg College, per a release from the school. Hibbs previously was an assistant at Gettysburg in 2003 and from 1997-99.

Hibbs' replacement at William Penn will have little time to get settled. Fall sports practices begin Monday, and opening night for football season is Sept. 3. The Bearcats open up their 2010 campaign at home against Reading.
