Chambersburg's offense had a handful of chances to close the door on Central Dauphin East.

That didn't happen.

But the Trojan defense picked up the slack and held off the Panthers for a 52-50 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division boys basketball victory Tuesday.

The game, moved up to a 3:30 p.m. start to try to beat the weather, was played before perhaps 100 fans at the CASHS Field House.

"I wholeheartedly believe defense won this one," Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said.

With the game tied 45-45 with about five minutes left, the Trojans' Jordan Riley made a steal and scored. On the next East possession, Kyle Patterson blocked a shot by Aris Scott, retrieved the ball and passed to Gabe Carson-Rivera for a fastbreak bucket. Moments later, Kayone Teal made a steal and scored on a break.

Suddenly, Chambersburg held a six-point lead, 51-45, matching its biggest lead of the game, with four minutes left.

But from that point on, the Trojans missed two wide-open layups and another

close-in shot, turned the ball over once and made just one free throw in six attempts (after hitting 13 of 18 before that).

Shreffler said, "We put ourselves in position to score on offense, but missed a couple of easy ones. But -- and this was big -- our heads didn't stay down. We kept after it and did what we needed to do on defense."

The Panthers put the game in the hands of Christyan DeVan at that point. With 2:30 left, he was fouled and hit one of two to make it 51-46. He went to the hoop again and was fouled, hitting both to make it 51-48.

Teal then missed a layup, got the rebound, was fouled and badly missed both foul shots. With 1:20 left, DeVan scored on a drive to bring CDE to within 51-50.

Chambersburg turned it over. This time when DeVan drove the left baseline, Riley stripped the ball from him.

"I was expecting that move," Riley said. "We know that defense is always the key to the game."

The Trojans' Tyler Young made the first of two foul shots to make it 52-50 with 35 seconds left, then Tyler Fore secured the rebound. That eventually gave Carson-Rivera a free throw, but he missed.

DeVan again drove the baseline and again, Riley was there to take the ball away.

Panther coach Bruce Leib said, "We thought maybe Christyan was hit on that, but those calls even out. He usually gets that call and goes to the line a lot. Their kid just made a good play on the ball."

"I've seen DeVan draw as many as nine fouls in one game," Shreffler said. "He's a hard-nosed kid who demands contact on those plays. Jordan was really smart in those situations, especially with four fouls on him."

Riley was fouled after the steal, but he also missed at the line, so CD East had one more chance with 0:08 left.

"We wanted to work a dribble toss for either a two or an open three," Leib said. "Maybe we should have brought it up first and then called a timeout, but we didn't want to get trapped."

With 3-point shooters Aaron DeVan and Kevin Richter well-covered, Richter had to put up a prayer that came up short.

Shreffler said, "We expected them to go to (Aaron) DeVan, but when he caught the ball, Gabe was right in his face."

In addition to his defense (4 steals), Riley hit a trio of threes and scored a career-high 13 points. Carson-Rivera added 12 points and three assists and Teal had six rebounds.

Notes: Chambersburg's makeup game at Central Dauphin has been moved from tonight to Thursday ... East got 19 points from Scott, 12 from Aaron DeVan and 10 from Christyan Devan ... The Panthers need to win at State College on Thursday and at home vs. Bishop McDevitt on Friday to qualify for the playoffs.
