The York Daily Record/Sunday News has named its 2008-09 Div. I boys' swimming and diving all-stars.
SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Scott Paine, Dallastown: A talented leader on the Division I champion Wildcats, the senior was second in both the 200 and 500 freestyles at the YAIAA championships.
He won a sixth-place medal in the 500 free at the District 3 Class AAA championships with a 4:52.41 and, after finishing 10th in the 200 free, was key on Dallastown's freestyle relay squads.
ALL-STARS
Chris Bankert, Spring Grove: The Rocket junior was a strong sprinter all season. He placed sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 50 free at the YAIAA championships before going 21st and 23rd at districts.
Matthew Blumhard, Dallastown: Only a sophomore, Blumhard made a name for himself with fourth-place medals in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke at the league meet. He also posted a 14th in back and 21st in the fly at districts.
Brendt Coyle, Central York: A terrific breaststroker, Coyle earned a silver medal at the YAIAA meet and qualified for districts. He swam freestyle events as well and his senior leadership was huge for the budding Panthers' program.
Dan Cromwell, Red Lion: The senior posted the league's fifth-best backstroke and was ninth in the 100 free. He went on to place 23rd in the back at difficult District 3 AAA championships.
Caleb Kinard, Dallastown: Another quality Wildcat freestyler, the junior was eight in the 200 and ninth in the 500 at the league meet.
Brandon Murphy, Central York: The junior gave Central a top-notch sprinter, winning a bronze medal in the 50 free at the league meet, where he also was 10th in the fly. He was 20th in the 50 at the district meet.
Alex Pandelidis, Dallastown: Good at the district events, the junior was sixth in the 500 and seventh in the 200 at the league meet. He also was a solid 11th in 500, 13th in the 200 at districts.
Brandon Shaffer, South Western: The YAIAA bronze medal winner in the 200 individual medley also finished fourth in the 500 free, plus he anchored a talented Mustang 400 free relay. The sophomore was 11th in the IM at districts, 13th in the 500 at districts.
Patrick Shannon, South Western: Shannon was third in the league's 100 backstroke race and finished fourth in the 100 free. He capped his junior season with a 19th place in the free and was 22nd in the back at districts.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Rich Howley, Dallastown: He always finds a way to motivate his swimmers to achieve their best while making sure they swim in the right events, which led to a Division I title.
Despite not having a boys' swimmer qualify for the state meet, the Wildcats' posted a 5-0 Division I, 8-2 overall dual meet season with one loss being a narrow 48-46 defeat at rival York Suburban, which won the YAIAA Division II title.
