NEW OXFORD -- The end result -- a lopsided scoreboard and a victory -- was the same as it has been all season for William Penn.

The process, though, was a little different.

High-scoring William Penn found itself in a two-quarter tussle with a stubborn New Oxford squad Friday night before eventually pulling away for a 48-12 victory that kept the Bearcats spotless on the season and in YAIAA Division I.

"We still have to take care of some small things, dotting our I's and crossing our T's," William Penn coach Matt Ortega said. "It comes down to the fact that the kids haven't played four quarters yet. Tonight was good for getting them prepared."

New Oxford (1-5, 0-3 Division I) gave the Bearcats a more strenuous workout then they received during the season's first five games. The Colonials took the opening kickoff and promptly took off on an 11-play, 83-yard drive that chewed 4:43 off the clock. Tailback Nick Rebert capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, giving the Ox a 6-0 lead before William Penn (6-0, 3-0 Division I) had a chance to take the field.

"Talk about scripting what you want to have happen," New Oxford head coach Matt Muller said. "We didn't want (Jordan) Davis on the field. If he's not on the field he can't beat you."

The Colonials' good feelings didn't last long. The Bearcats took all of one play to answer the opening score, as Steffonte Doby (12 carries, 166 yards) raced 54 yards off-tackle for a touchdown and an eventual 7-6 William Penn lead.

After a second-quarter Andre Callum interception, Doby struck again. Four plays into the possession, the tailback went in from 15 yards out to give the Bearcats a 14-6 lead with nine minutes remaining.

The backbreakers came in the waning minutes of the half. A 46-yard run from Doby was the key play on a four-play drive that culminated in Brandon Walker's 1-yard scoring run with 2:46 to play. After forcing a New Oxford punt on the next possession, the

William Penn's Andre Callum (11) takes down New Oxford's Nick Rebert during Friday's game. Rebert's 8-yard run in the first quarter gave the Colonials a quick 6-0 lead before the Bearcats rallied back for a 48-12 win.

Bearcats assured themselves a 28-6 halftime lead when Davis hit Callum for a 13-yard scoring strike.

William Penn tried to put the game away on the opening drive of the second half, but a goal-line stand by the Colonials kept the Bearcats off the board.

But William Penn eventually picked up those points -- and more -- thanks to Barry Bowman. The senior took his only carry of the night 44 yards for a score late in the third quarter to make it 35-6. When New Oxford countered with another Rebert touchdown run to make it 35-12, Bowman took the ensuing kickoff back 83 yards for another touchdown.

The scoring was finished by Callum's 74-yard interception return, capping the night of big plays for the Bearcats. With a four-quarter effort under their belt, the Bearcats now turn toward Dallastown -- a team that has won as many games as William Penn's first five opponents combined.

"They're really excited," Ortega said. "That's been a good rivalry for us the last few years. I think they're going to come out and play their A-game next Friday."
