ATGLEN — When you're as good with the bat as West Chester Rustin's Anna Steinmetz and Caela Abadie are, you aren't going to see a whole lot of good pitches coming your way. Sometimes teams will walk you more often than they pitch to you. So when you do see a good pitch, you've got to take advantage.

Tuesday afternoon at Octorara, the Braves rolled the dice and let the Golden Knight sluggers swing the bat. The result was Steinmetz reaching base and scoring in four of five plate appearances, with a triple, a homer, and four RBIs. Abadie, meanwhile, was 2 of 3 with a pair of runs scored by her courtesy runner, and the Golden Knights rebounded from a couple tough losses to top Octorara, 14-1, in five innings.

Steinmetz's triple would likely have been a home run at most of the fenced fields in the league, going way back in left field.

"I was ready to hit today,' said Steinmetz. "Sometimes it's not easy staying ready. I'm used to getting a lot of walks. But I saw pitches I liked, and just went with them.'

The Golden Knights got contributions from just about everywhere in the lineup, with hits or runs from all nine slots in the order. Brittany Fichter also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with trus scored and two RBIs."We put those two (Steinmetz and Abadie) at the top of the order to get them as many at-bats as we can,' said Rustin coach Bruce Dudley. "And if they walk them, we have girls like Elaina DiPrimo and Rachael Fricker that are hitting really well right now. Fricker has to be hitting close to .400.

But it wasn't all offense for Rustin. Abadie was as good in the circle as she was in the batter's box, maybe even a little better throwing the ball. The Rustin hurler struck out eight of the first 10 hitters she faced and carried a no-hitter into the fifth before Octorara's Carly Imbierowicz broke it up, stroking a double to left with one out. Imbierowicz later scored on an error."We tried to keep things straight forward and simple early on,' said Abadie's catcher Steinmetz. "But as the game went on, she wanted to start working in more of her stuff, and pretty much all of it was working.'

It never hurts to have a little cushion to work with, either. Rustin scored in all but the final frame, plating two in the first, one in the second, seven in the third, and four in the fourth.

"It definitely helps to know that the team has your back,' said Abadie. "Especially my infielders and outfielders. It really helps you to know that if you are struggling, the defense is going to pick you up.'

With all the well-deserved ink Abadie gets for her hitting, it's easy to forget that she can pitch, too.

"She can definitely throw,' said Dudley. "In fact, I'd say she's probably second only to (Kennett's Brooke) Harner on our side of the league.'

Rustin will see Harner soon, as the top two teams in the Ches-Mont American have their first showdown of the season this afternoon.

"The fight is in the dog,' said Dudley. "These girls are going to battle anyone. It's just a matter of getting all the little things to add up to something bigger.'

Abadie finished the day allowing just the one unearned run on one hit. She struck out 11, and walked three.

"It feels great to get the win, and get it in the way we did today,' said Abadie. "It gives us a lot of confidence, and now we just have to carry this momentum with us into our game (today) against Kennett.'
