For 21st Century MediaASTON — West Chester Rustin's boys swim team finished its regular season in style Friday afternoon -- dotting the i's and crossing the t's as they put the finishing touches on a perfect Ches-Mont League American Division season with a 105-68 win over Sun Valley.

The Rustin girls also concluded their regular season with a victory when they knocked off the host Vanguards, 107-66. The win kept alive their slim title hopes. The Golden Knights finished with a 4-1 division slate. Unionville (3-0) swims Great Valley (2-1) this afternoon, so a win by the Patriots would result in a three-way tie for the division crown.

Fast times were not a matter of priority for the Rustin swimmers in Friday's meet -- for a number of reasons. This is the "dog days' portion of the season when everyone is training extra hard to set up a good taper heading into the postseason.

Because it was a less-than-challenging meet, Rustin coach Kelly Nelson had most of her team members swim around -- competing in events other than their regular events just for a change of pace.

Also, times were slower than usual because of the conditions at the Vanguards' pool at Northley Middle School, which normally has a hot atmosphere and warm water. Because of the milder weather outside, the natatorium felt like a steam bath and the pool water was even hotter than usual.

"It's always hot at this pool but even more so today,' said head official Rick Carson, whose kids, Kelly and Kevin were Daily Local News All-Area swimmers when they competed at Owen J. Roberts. "After working a meet here, it always feel great to get out in the cold air as soon as it's over.'

Many of Rustin's swimmers commented on how warm the pool water was. And, there were a lot of sleepy yawns by many of them while waiting for their events.

The Knights still swam well and competed hard. Some found ways to challenge themselves -- like Tyler Cummings.

The powerful junior swam back-to-back events and won them both. He touched first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.24 and then was back in the water a few minutes later to take first in the 100 freestyle with a clocking of 51.05."It was my ideal to swim back-to-back events,' said Cummings. "I just wanted to see what I could do before districts. I was happy with my 100 fly but I need to work on my 100 free. These will be my events at districts and my times right now are about where I was last year at districts -- and that was with a taper.'

Rustin took first place in every event -- in both meets.

The boys won the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Kasyn Fishbaugh, Luca Mastrofini, Gustavo Vaselli and Brenden Yoo. Fishbaugh and Yoo teamed with Ben Service and Cummings on the winning 200 medley relay and the foursome of James Quinter, Andrew Koelln, Frank Dello Buono and Mastrofini touched first in the 400 free relay.

Dello Buono and Service, two of the Knights' veteran aces, left their regular events behind and challenged each other in the 100 backstroke. Dello Buono touched first at 1:00.33 and Service was close behind at 1:00.54.

"This was the first time I swam back this year -- and only my third time ever,' said Dello Buono, a senior. "It didn't feel bad. I took a second off my time.'

At the District One Class AAA Championships later this season, Dello Buono will compete in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM while Service will swim the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly.

Steven DeWitt, who is close to qualifying for districts in the 100 backstroke, placed first in the 100 breaststroke in Friday's meet with a time of 1:10.56.

"This was my first time to ever swim 100 breast,' said DeWitt, a junior. "It was all right but it was also a little tiring.'

Rustin's other winners in individual swim events were Dan Brown in the 500 freestyle at 5:34.03, Nick Villone in the 200 IM at 2:12.48, Mastrofini in the 200 freestyle at 1:55.26 and Fishbaugh in the 50 freestyle at 24.25.

There were two individual double-winners for the Rustin girls.

Megan Koczur was first in the 200 freestyle at 2:13.53 and first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.95. Amber Hontz, who is also a top-flight distance runner for Rustin in the fall and spring, took first in the 200 IM at 2:29.76 and then came back later to win the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:13.69.

"My events for districts are the 100 back and the 50 free but I felt comfortable in both these events today,' said Koczur, a freshman. "I was happy with my 100 fly. It was my best time. It feels like my stroke is improving.'

Katarina Darmofal was a triple-winner with a win in the 50 free at 27.76 and as part of the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. She also was second in 100 breaststroke at 1:18.83.

"The 50 free was O.K. but it wasn't my best,' said Darmofal, a sophomore. "I had health issues that held me back for awhile but my times now are starting to come back down.'

Some of the Knights' other top finishers were Juliet McLaughlin, who was first in the 500 freestyle at 5:45.95 and a member of the winning 200 medley relay; Mollie Cholden, who won the 100 free with a time of 1:01.81; Jacquelyn Bingham, who touched first in the 100 backstroke at 1:11.49; and Caitlyn Service, who was on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays and was runner-up in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle.
