DOWNINGTOWN -- With no parade in the morning, Bishop Shanahan was left with just a football game to celebrate homecoming.

The lack of a parade did not bother the Eagles running backs. They decided to have one anyway. The only ones that were not enjoying the festivities were the Octorara defense.

Bishop Shanahan rushed for a season-high 443 yards in a 56-13 victory over Octorara in a nonleague game at Jack Mancini Field Saturday.

Dan Murphy led the Eagles dominant performance on the ground. The junior quarterback had nine carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns on the day. The first touchdown run was a 73-yard burst up the middle while the second went for 35 yards.

Murphy deferred the accolades and passed them over to his offensive line after his career day.

"The line stepped up and were huge for us all day,' Murphy said. "I could have run forever with them blocking today.'

Bishop Shanahan head coach Paul Meyers used Murphy's athleticism to create plenty of mismatches against the Braves defense.

"(Dan's) just a good athlete,' Meyers said. "We just decided to move him all over the place. It's hard to scout him.'

Murphy also completed all three of his pass attempts for 58 yards. He finished with 247 yards of offense; 228 coming in the first half.

Jerry Riccardo also scored two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles. His first was from yards out to give Shanahan an early 8-0 lead.

Octorara responded on its ensuing possession. Nathan Reynolds completed a five play, 50 yard drive with a 25-yard draw up the middle to make it 8-6.

From there, it was all Bishop Shanahan as the Eagles scored 41 unanswered points to turn this one into a rout.

The start was unusual for Meyers, whose team lost two fumbles in the early going.

"We were a little sloppy early and I don't know what it was,' Meyers said. "We're not used to that. We don't usually play that bad in the early going, but we corrected it. The kids got themselves together and changed it.'

Shanahan finished with 534 yards of offense and 56 points, both season-highs. The Eagles (4-4) also snapped a season-long four game losing streak.

Riccardo finished with five carries for 56 yards. Cody Smith had four carries for 43 yards, a catch for 26 yards, and a touchdown.

The Braves (1-8) have lost three in a row, but were in this game after a quarter. Head coach Jed King believes his team shot itself in the foot with early miscues.

"We had a lot of negative plays on early drives and they compounded on us,' King said. "To Shanahan's credit, they made some great plays and we just never stopped them on defense. We just have to play the whole 48 minutes and we didn't do that.'

Octorara finished with 146 yards of offense. Alex Gooden led the Braves with 59 rushing yards, 51 passing yards and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Corey Cooper in the fourth quarter.

The win was a big for Shanahan's playoff chances. The Eagles headed into the game fifth in the District 1 Class AAA playoff race. A win over Avon Grove Saturday will clinch a playoff berth.

"We needed this win today to help us reach the playoffs,' Murphy said. "We got to win out. That's what we got to do.
