Sierra Moore entered the District 3 Class AA Track and Field Championships confident that she would qualify for the state meet in the 200-meter dash. After all, she was seeded third, the final spot that advances, and had been improving throughout the season in what is her best event.
She finished fourth Saturday, but her time of 26.28 seconds beat the automatic qualifying time by two one-hundredths of a second. That's literally faster than the blink of an eye, which takes between three- and four-tenths of a second.
Some more perspective: If she had run that much slower, she would've come in sixth. If she had gone that much faster, Moore, a senior at Delone Catholic High, would've won.
Such is the life of sprinting, but one she's accustomed to.
"It's really crazy," she said, still catching her breath following the race. "But some people don't understand that's a lot of time. It's just not a little bit. It could be one foot that could get you in trouble. One bad block start can mess up your entire race."
Littlestown senior Brandon Study was a victim of the time crunch Saturday. He went 11.14 in his 100-meter dash, good enough for second, but just three one-hundredths of a second behind the winning time of 11.11.
His performance, however, qualified him for the PIAA Track and Field Championships, scheduled Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University. He will also run the 200-meter dash after going 22.35, good enough for third.
Study had hoped to do better, despite setting an official personal best by dropping nearly two-tenths of a second over the two-day meet.
"A little disappointed to be honest," he said. "I wanted first in both of them. It just felt like it
His coach, Corey Bittle, has spent all season pushing Study to attempt to be perfect.
"You can't cut any corners," Bittle said. "That's one thing Brandon learned last year, and he carried it over to this year. He was so close to being a district champion. If it was a 105- or 110-meters, I think he would've won it. But, hey, we're going to move on."
So is Moore, who also qualified in the 100-meter dash with a third-place time of 12.80, two one-hundredths better than the third-place finisher. The trip to states comes one year after not doing track.
"Sometimes not running a lot can just affect you a little bit," she said. "I just got back into the swing of things later in the season."
Punching the giant: South Western senior Tess Weaver finished second in the Class AAA shot put after making one small adjustment to her technique.
"Usually I drop (my left elbow) down to my side," said Weaver, who throws right-handed. "It was more keeping it up. Keep it up so my chest is up and not down. Like we always say, 'Punch the giant.'"
She has focused on the switch for the entire season, saying it finally clicked Saturday. Weaver threw 38 feet, 9 3/4 inches, a career best by about two feet. She will compete in the state meet this weekend.
While it was a goal to make the meet for the first time, she didn't think she would have that great of a performance.
"No, not at all today," Weaver said. "But my coach said, 'This may be your last thing. Go for it.' It's a good way to end senior year. Achieved it."
