Pulling away: Kellen Williams, above, is the top seed in the 300 hurdles for the District 3 Track & Field Championships (Greg Holder/For Public Opinion)

It has not been a very good week for the Chambersburg girls track & field team.

On Monday, Natalie Holder was declared out for this weekend's District 3 Championships at Shippensburg University's Grove Stadium because of a stress fracture in her foot. Holder was seeded No. 2 in the 800.

Then, Trojan coach Chris Monheim found out Wednesday that Courtney Group is also out. Group landed on her head when she was knocked around at the start of the 4 x 800 relay at the Mid Penn meet last Saturday and has been suffering from concussion symptoms.

"It was bad enough to lose Holder, but to lose both Holder and Group hurts," Monheim said. "Prior to this, we thought we had a shot at challenging for the team title. To do that, you need some wins and to do well in the relays, and we had that chance."

The 4 x 800 team, now without both girls, will not compete.

For the Trojans, Marshay Ryan has the top seed in the long jump and triple jump - by a large margin in both. Her 18-7.5 is 9 inches better than the second seed and her 40-5 in the triple is over 2.5 feet more than the No. 2 seed.

Jess Whitmore is seeded fourth in the 100 and the 4 x 100 relay team (Ryan, Miana Harrison, McKensi Washabaugh and Whitmore) has earned the No. 4 seed.

Monheim said, "Jess has gotten better as the season's gone on and she's not running the 200 so she can focus and be fresh for the 100 and relay. That relay is not that far from the school record and could make

states."

Waynesboro sprinter Maddie Sellers should be fresh, too. She did not run at the Mid Penns, but is seeded fifth in the 400 and sixth in the 200.

Maidens coach Darwin Seiler said, "Maddie had a 102 fever last week, so it was not worth it to run her. She's looked good this week."

The other high seed among area girls is Nakita Gearhart of Greencastle-Antrim in the discus; she is seeded fourth.

Chambersburg's Kellen Williams is the only area boy who has earned a top seed - Williams has run the 300 hurdles in 38.70, two tenths of a second faster than Robert Cardina of Conestoga Valley.

Two area athletes have No. 2 seeds - Liam Corcoran of James Buchanan in the 3200 and Jonny Adgers of Waynesboro in the long jump.

JB coach Jason Cotton said, "I think Liam has a really good chance Friday (in the 3200); I like his chances better in the two-mile than in the mile, because the district has some really good 1600 times. He's had some strong performances in the two-mile, maybe better than we expected this year."

Corcoran's best time is 9:29.77, while top seed Connor Strynkowski of Palmyra has run 9:28.81.

Cotton said, "Liam wasn't feeling that good for Mid Penns, but he's had a good week."

Adgers has jumped 22-4.5 in the long jump, second only to Reading's Imani Brown (23-3).

Seiler said, "He hit that jump in a dual meet against West Perry and he had one over 23 feet that day that he fouled on. If he can hit his marks, I think he has a chance."

Adgers is also seeded fifth in the high jump and teammate Andrew Paterno is fifth in the shot put.

For Chambersburg, the 4 x 800 relay will renew its rivalry with Cumberland Valley. The Trojans had the best time in the district until CV stole it last week at the Mid Penns. The Eagles went 7:49.61 and Chambersburg (Nick Rotz, Adam Harriger, Aaron Powell, Ryun Holder) had a school record 7:50.05.

Holder is second in the 800 behind CV's Alec Kunzweiler, with a difference of just over a tenth of a second. Rotz is also seeded fourth in the 1600, just one spot above Corcoran.

Chambersburg's 4 x 400 team of Williams, Powell, Rotz and Holder is seeded No. 3.
