MYERSTOWN -- Hands on his hips, Mikesh Desai stood and watched helplessly.
While his Council Rock North opponent tracked down a stray ball in between points, the Central York junior fixed his eyes on Prateek Dhar on the adjacent court. When his teammate drilled a forehand into the net, Desai just looked forward and sighed.
His body language said it all: It was not going to be Central York's day during Tuesday's PIAA Class AAA boys' tennis first round tournament match.
Despite plowing through the District 3 tournament bracket en route to the title earlier this month, the Panthers could not hang with the fourth-place team from District 1. The Indians needed only 58 minutes to clinch the 4-1 victory at Eastern Lebanon County High School and advance to this weekend's quarterfinals.
"As well as that team played -- and we just got flat out beat today -- they realized there was things they could have done, things they could have executed," Central York coach Eric Sweitzer said of his squad. "They gave a great effort, but they didn't always execute to finish points. So they realized that a little bit is still on their racket. There's things that they can improve between now and next year."
All seven Central York starters return for next season, but Council Rock North quickly made it evident that 2008 was not the Panthers' time to shine in the PIAA tournament.
The Indians won the first set of all three singles matches and the No. 2 doubles match and rode that
The Indians' David Kazakevich wrapped up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Clarke Freeman at No. 1 singles before the Panthers earned their only victory of the afternoon at No. 1 doubles. Evan Cunningham and Brian Shackelford won a 10-4 tiebreaker in lieu of a third set after they split the first two against Neil Leshinsky and Adrian Taskin.
The victory preserved undefeated singles and doubles records in team matches for both Cunningham and Shackelford, but wasn't nearly enough to extend the Panthers' season.
"Last year we played Williamsport in the first round and we were literally back on the bus in 30 minutes," Council Rock North coach Eric Scholl said. "So we didn't know what to expect here today, but we watched (Central York) warm up and I told our guys that these guys were a lot better than last year, and they were. But we just play such tough competition (in District 1) all year."
Sweitzer said they weren't content with just reaching the state tournament. But even with the loss, the Central York coach said it was "an extremely successful season" this year. The Panthers earned a District 3 title in the sport for the first time in school history.
"The success of this season just raises the bar for next year," Sweitzer said.
How high, exactly?
"This team said it right there in that huddle -- they said their goal is to win a state title," Sweitzer said. "They know they have to put a lot of work in -- every single kid on the team has to put a lot of work in. But that's a goal to set."
Biglerville bows out too: In Allentown, the Canners dropped their first-round PIAA match as well Tuesday, falling to District 11 champion Southern Lehigh 5-0 in the Class AA tournament at West End Racquet Club.
