The Central York boys' tennis team utilized a dominant effort throughout its lineup to register consecutive 3-0 sweeps in the semifinals and finals of the District 3 Class AAA tournament and claim the school's first district crown in the sport today at ELCO High School.
No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Clarke Freeman and Mikesh Desai and the No. 1 doubles team of Evan Cunningham and Brian Shackelford earned the wins in both victories, which came against Wilson in the semifinal and Hempfield in the championship match.
No. 3 singles player Prateek Dhar and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Taylor Stoll and Derek Hoffer were all leading or tied during the two matches when their teammates clinched the victories.
"We had a great team effort -- one through seven," Central coach Eric Sweitzer said. "Every single guy stepped up and that's really been a focus for the guys this year -- everybody bringing their 'A' game. Each court stepped up. Everybody really focused and took care of their business and that was the key today."
The Panthers will face the fourth-place team from District 1 in the first round of the PIAA tournament on May 13.
Freeman had the easiest time of it at the top of the lineup, pounding Wilson's Paul Bailey, 6-0, 6-1, before thumping Hempfield's Kevin Schulz, 6-1, 6-0, in the final. Desai was almost as dominant, earning a 6-1, 6-3 semifinal victory against Kenny Eagle and a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Andrew Thomas.
But it was Central's strength
Stoll and Hoffer, usually the sixth and seventh players in the Central lineup, were up a set in each of their matches.
"Even the guys that didn't get a win were winning and that's pivotal for a team," Sweitzer said. "Everybody is focused on their court, but they're watching each other and cheering each other on. And success sort of breeds success and confidence."
Only the YAIAA Division I champion qualifies for the district tournament, and the Central finished ahead of six-time defending champion Dallastown this season to grab the lone spot.
"We've come in second so many times," Sweitzer said. "We came in second back when I was playing and the last couple of years we came in second. It was really neat to take advantage and the guys did a great job of that. They really embraced the moment."
In District 3 Class AA action today, Biglerville lost to eventual champion Wyomissing, 4-0, in the semifinals. But the Canners bounced back to defeat Palmyra in the consolation match, 3-1.
